| CENTER FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING |
Center for Teaching and Learning: Student Voice on Engagement and Belonging
A Student Panel Discussion
|
Thursday, February 23 1-3 p.m. |
Gothic Lounge Hepburn Hall Room 202 or Via Zoom
|
As Higher Education evolves, is NJCU, and its faculty, staff, and administrators, ready to take on new challenges and strive to serve our increasingly diverse students in terms of their ever-changing educational needs? Are we offering academic programs, student services, and educational experiences that they really need to be successful? What are our value propositions to the students? What does an NJCU degree mean for our students in their future career and personal success? Are we creating unnecessary barriers that alienate or block our students from achieving their dreams?
Let’s listen to the students directly. The Center for Teaching and Learning presents a Student Panel Discussion on Engagement and Belonging. The student panel will consist of a student moderator and a diverse group of student panelists from different majors and fields. The panel discussion will have two segments. The first 30 – 45 minutes will be given to faculty, staff, and administrators to formulate a list of questions they would ask the students. The remaining 75 – 90 minutes will be given to the student panel to answer these questions. The questions will be delivered to the panelists by the student moderator, so the students will not know from whom the questions come and they will feel more comfortable giving more candid answers.
This is a unique opportunity to gain insights and perspectives from the students. For faculty, staff, and administrative members, please come ready to ask your questions
If you choose to attend virtually on Zoom, please also complete the Zoom registration, available in the registration form.

Drawing Reverberation Series, mixed media on paper, 24 x 35 inches. [Detail]
|
The Visual Arts Gallery Presents: |
Frioz Mahmud: Early Episodes II |
Visual Arts Building | Visual Arts Gallery |
Reception and Talk: Tuesday, February 21 | 5-8 p.m. (Talk at 5:30 p.m.) |
This solo exhibition of mixed media works on paper by Bangladesh-born, New York-based artist Firoz Mahmud, engages his cultural and political heritage, touching on themes like war and conflict, legacies of the Bengal region, and dreams of immigrant families in new lands. The Drawing Reverberation series of mixed media drawings on homemade papers delineate how foreign rulers from Persia came to greater Bengal for trading and preaching Islam. The sociopolitical issues during the Mughal era and the British East India company’s strategic colonial past are the core of this series of works on paper.
The earlier version of the exhibition was presented at the York College in York, Pennsylvania.

The NJCU Lemmerman Gallery presents: |
Tuesday, January 31- Friday, March 3 |
Hepburn Hall, Room 323 | Harold B. Lemmerman Gallery |
Curated by Doris Cacoilo
This exhibition presents the artist Danielle Scott’s dedication to social commentary and ancestral storytelling. The artist spent over a year visiting plantations in the United States sourcing materials and historical documentation to connect to these stories and visualize them in these works. She feels a calling to tell the stories of ancestors, of warriors, of love, of sadness, and of resilience. This collection integrates photographs, delicate papers, reprinted documents, fabrics and objects to create layered portraits of the lineage of black families across generations.
This exhibition stems from an exhibition, Ancestral Call, presented by Gallery Aferro from October 7, 2022 to January 21, 2023, and originally curated by Anthony E. Boone and Bryant Small. Special thanks to Gallery Aferro directors and the artists for their collaboration.

Cheryl Gross: BoxingBabes & Cowgirls |
Opening reception: Wednesday, March 15, 5-8 p.m. Artist talk: Thursday, March 16, 1-2 p.m. |
Hepburn Hall, Room 323 | Harold B. Lemmerman Gallery |
The exhibition, BoxingBabes & Cowgirls, showcases Cheryl Gross’ most recent body of work which celebrates both real and fictitious cowgirls and women boxers as heroines. By embracing freedom, breaking boundaries, and eschewing outdated forms of gender identity, Gross created these series out of her fantasy, memory, and research of historical and contemporary women in boxing, sharpshooting, and rodeo performance. Gross’ colorful paintings honor these lesser-known trailblazers in American history with a unique style which combines kinetic splatters and illustrative figuration.

Mental Health Support for the NJCU Community |
Please know that on July 16, 2022, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline became “988,” replacing the previous 1-800-273-8255 (TALK) number. Today, “988” is the three-digit, nationwide phone number to connect directly to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. By calling or texting 988, you’ll connect with mental health professionals 24/7 that provides confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress. Those experiencing a mental health crisis or those worried about someone who may need crisis support can call this number.
Veterans can press “1” after dialing 988 to connect directly to the Veterans Crisis Lifeline which serves our nation’s Veterans, service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and those who support them. For texts, Veterans should continue to text the Veterans Crisis Lifeline short code: 838255.
These centers are supported by local and state sources as well as the Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The 988 Lifeline provides 24/7, confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress.

The silent films of famed French cinematographer Georges Méliès are set to a live score by French musicians Alcoléa & Cie in this charming ciné-concert entitled “Right in the Eye.”
Right in the Eye (En plein dans l’oeil) is a multimedia show composed of 12 films by Georges Méliès, a pioneer of the cinema and a wizard of special effects.
On stage, three virtuoso musicians play some 50 different instruments, including rare and unique ones, breathing fresh impetus into these cinematographic gems.
In a subtly-staged setting, in perfect symbiosis with the imagery, the musicians transport us in an inventive production, performed both onstage and onscreen, that reflects the creative genius of Méliès.

A Chorus Line examines one day in the life of a dancer, vying for a spot in the chorus of a Broadway musical. After the first round of cuts, each dancer is asked to speak personally about themselves. Discomfort opens into revelation, confession leads to redemption, and within the bright, outwardly homogenous chorus, the audience begins to see each dancer’s individuality. Based on real Broadway dancers’ stories, compiled by dancer and choreographer Michael Bennett, and with an award winning score by Marvin Hamlisch, A Chorus Line is a funny, heartbreaking, and refreshingly honest journey through these stories of strength, determination, and fortitude on the path to artistic fulfillment.

Functioning in a Distracted World |
Virtual Event Monday, April 3, 2023 | 12-6 p.m.

The mission of Pedagogy Day is to bring together scholars, educators, and students to exchange ideas on current evidence-based teaching and learning practices. The theme for 2023 focuses on how the human mind functions in a distracted world through sustained attention. How can we minimize distractions, e.g., by filtering out irrelevant stimuli during a learning process? Let’s critically engage in the assessment of digital education for effective usage and growth.
