Hi there,
As we enter our third week of the spring semester and wish for warmer weather, it’s already time to plan ahead for the upcoming academic year. Today, Campus Living & Residential Education is excited to announce our housing registration process for students who plan to live on-campus during the 2023-24 academic year. We are introducing a few new elements to the process to provide you with more choice in where you live and who you live with.
There’s no immediate action to take today. There is, however, important information we are providing in this email so we suggest that you take time to scan & read so you know what’s coming up soon!
Today’s email outlines the new parts of the processes, gives you an opportunity to learn more about 2023-24 housing options, familiarize yourself with the application process, and most importantly (!) gives you time to begin conversations with your roommates, friends, or family about your housing wishes for next year.
Quick Timeline Snapshot:
Feb. 7 - 22: Room Renewal Period / Registration Period for Students with Approved DSS Accommodations
Feb. 27 - March 21: Registration Period for Rising 4th-, 3rd-, and 2nd-Year Students (and friends)
March 22 - April 19 : Room Type Selection Period
**Feb. 21 - April 4: Special Application Periods: District House Affinity Living / Fraternity & Sorority Housing
This won’t be the last email you receive about this process! We will keep you informed when specific periods of this process that may pertain to you will be opening soon and when actions are required of you.

Your Class Year and Our Residency Requirement |
|
|
Housing at GW is based on your class year. This is determined using the year you were admitted to the university, not necessarily the number of academic credits you have.
|
-
Your class year is Contact Campus Living and you are considered a Contact Campus Living student. If you believe this is inaccurate, let us know via email at living@gwu.edu.
|
Earlier this semester we announced that we have removed the third year of our residency requirement. This means:
|
- Only 1st- and 2nd-year students will be required to live on-campus starting fall 2023 (unless granted an exemption).
- Rising 3rd- and 4th-year students are not required to live on campus.
-
IF you are a rising 3rd- or 4th-year student and do not desire to live on-campus, there is nothing further you need to do. We wish you the best of luck with your off-campus housing search or continued off-campus living!

2023-2024 Upperclass Residence Halls |
As we review our housing inventory, from time to time we make adjustments to the types of students who will live in certain residential buildings. Familiarize yourself with next academic year’s residential communities.
|
You may notice a few current upperclass buildings missing from the list. In 2023-24, Guthridge will be a 1st-year only hall, Mitchell will be an all-class year hall, and South will be a 3rd- & 4th-year only residence hall.
We know the cost of a room/unit may be a factor in your on-campus housing choice. The current 2022-23 Housing Rates posted online will be updated and available mid-February to show the 2023-24 rates.
|
|
|
A continued opportunity to keep your current room for next year (if eligible).
|
The first phase of our on-campus housing process kicks off with a very important question— If you had the chance to do it all over again, would you? And, if so, do you want to keep your current room to live in again next year?
If you are eligible based on the location of your building/room, our room renewal option may just be the opportunity you didn’t even realize you were waiting for!
If your current spring room will be in an upperclass building next academic year, you will have the opportunity to keep your current rooms for next year. This will also include the chance to pull-in friends into your current room for next year, if your current roommate/s will not be living on-campus next year or they choose not to participate in Room Renewal.
➡️ The Room Renewal period will last from Feb. 7 - 22.
Current residents of the following halls or communities are not eligible for Room Renewal:
|
-
Potomac, Madison, Lafayette, Thurston, Guthridge, and the Mount Vernon Campus. These halls will be first-year residence halls in 2023-24 or will have returning students living on select floors (West Hall)
- Townhouse A and Building JJ. The usage of these spaces have not been determined.
- District House Affinity Suites and Fraternity & Sorority Chapter Housing. These are specialized community living spaces in which the community itself chooses who lives in these housing options.

Registering with Select, Approved DSS Housing Accommodations 📝 | Feb 7 - 22 is the registration period for students with approved accommodations to register for housing.
|
If you have a select, approved housing accommodation from Disability Support Services, between Feb. 7-22 you will also register for housing. We strongly encourage students eligible for Room Renewal with approved accommodations to use the Room Renewal process to keep your current room to meet your housing needs. If you aren’t eligible for Room Renewal, and you have a DSS accommodation, you will register for housing during this period and will be assigned housing prior to the subsequent general student registration period.
|
|
|
This is the exciting and new opportunity we mentioned earlier!
|
After the housing registration periods for Room Renewal and DSS Housing Registration are complete, the majority of returning undergraduate students will register for housing and be assigned to a room through Choose Your Room Type. Choose Your Room Type is our exciting new way of placing students in control of where they live and with whom they live!
With Choose Your Room Type students directly choose their residence hall and room type. If you register for housing this way, you'll complete some initial registration steps, be assigned a room type selection start time, choose your room type after your start time begins, and then eventually get assigned to a specific room by Campus Living & Residential Education.
The Choose Your Room Type process will occur in two different periods throughout the spring semester:
|
- The initial registration period for Choose Your Room Type is: Feb. 27 - March 21.
- The room type selection period is March 27 - April 19.
|
If you are wondering about friends and roommates, it is okay! Returning undergraduate students will be provided the opportunity to create roommate groups and select their desired room type and building together with other friends across all class-years.

Specialized Communities: District House Affinity Living / Fraternity & Sorority Chapter Housing ✨ |
District House Affinity Living: There will be a specific application period for groups and student organizations to apply for affinity living in District House. After groups are chosen and affinity rosters are submitted, we will invite affinity group members to apply for housing if they haven’t yet done so through an earlier part of the 2023-2024 housing process.
Fraternity & Sorority Chapter Housing: Each fraternity and sorority with on-campus chapter housing will have a dedicated set of deadlines to determine rosters. The GW Fraternity & Sorority Life Team will work with chapter House Managers to determine chapter housing rosters and important dates. After rosters are due, Campus Living & Residential Education will invite chapter members on housing rosters to register for housing if they haven’t yet done so through an earlier period of the 2023-2024 housing process.
|
-
If this process is new to you as a new member of a sorority or fraternity, we encourage you to talk to other members of your chapter for additional information.
