No sleeping on the job
TU’s Oxley College of Health & Natural Sciences honored Oklahoma’s first graduating class of certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) with a celebration ceremony this month. TU’s three-year nurse anesthetist program, which can only accept 20 new students a year, began in 2020 in response to the critical need for trained professionals locally and regionally. Fourteen doctoral candidates moved from TU’s School of Nursing classrooms to hospitals, surgical centers, clinics and doctor’s offices to fill jobs that are in high demand.

R&D for CBN
While full prohibition of cannabis use is now limited to just four states, the plant’s capacity to be of medical and therapeutic use remains understudied. Chemistry junior Diego Fernandez is exploring new ways to synthesize a safe and beneficial cannabis product. Through TU’s Tulsa Undergraduate Research Challenge and Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Program, Fernandez is studying cannabinoid synthesis. “Perhaps it’s so captivating partly because of the taboo nature of the cannabis plant," he said.

Marketing magic
No stranger to the benefits of an immersive curriculum, Professor of Marketing Charles Wood recently assigned three sections of students to work with eight local startup clients as part of their Collins College of Business coursework requirements. This marked the first collaboration between Wood, 36 Degrees North, and the ACT House, providing students the opportunity to engage directly with local entrepreneurs. Wood’s assignment fostered collaboration and adaptability that left an impact on more than 100 students and the new businesses they assisted.
