Join us for Pennsylvania Native Species Day! |
We’re proudly joining gardens across the state in recognizing the third annual Pennsylvania Native Species Day, which falls on May 16—but we’re celebrating on May 17 (4–7 pm) and May 18 (10 am–5 pm) with a variety of walks and talks each day, all free with Gardens Admission.
Established by the Pennsylvania Invasive Species Council in 2022, Pennsylvania Native Species Day seeks to celebrate the state’s diverse native species and increase Pennsylvanians’ understanding of the importance of protecting them against the proliferation of invasive species.
With our walks in the Meadow Garden, Peirce’s Woods, and more, explore native plants in our Gardens and learn how you can use native plants and support native species at home.

Longwood Reimagined Continues |
Our West Conservatory is beginning to look like a garden! This month we are planting the permanent plants in our West Conservatory. From willow acacias to Mediterranean cypress to espaliered citrus there are 60 species in all (with 90 more species of seasonal plantings to come). Placing and planting 15-foot-tall acacias and 20-foot-tall cypress is no easy feat. Each specimen is carefully selected and positioned, in consideration of its neighboring plants, to create the design’s desired effect. Once the large plants are placed, we will begin to install the mid-story (or medium-sized plants) and conclude with the smaller bedding plants.
In all, more than 3,500 permanent plants and more than 2,500 seasonal plants (with up to 168 hanging baskets!) will grace this amazing Mediterranean-inspired garden. Our planting of the West Conservatory will continue throughout May and early June. Later in the summer, we will begin to plant the Cascade Garden and bring Roberto Burle Marx’s unique and immersive design back to life. We will share more Longwood Reimagined progress with you as we busily prepare for our grand debut this fall!
Want to learn more about this expansive project? Join Longwood staff for an upcoming Longwood Reimagined Member Talk on May 23 at 7 pm. Registration required, space limited.

Our Science Series continues! Join us on Saturday, May 18 at 1 pm in the Visitor Center Auditorium as Soils and Compost Manager Erik Stefferud explores how compost serves as a sustainable, eco-friendly, cost-effective practice that not only closes the waste loop but also elevates the overall health and resilience of a garden. Delve into how compost production improves the circularity of the materials we generate here at Longwood and how it enriches our Gardens—and how it could enrich yours.
