Monthly updates for SFBG Volunteers
Monthly updates for SFBG Volunteers
March 2022
Dear Volunteers,
We hope your March is off to a wonderful start! Although magnolia season is coming to an end, the rest of the Garden is waking up with the sounds of spring. We're excited to get out in nature and soak up the sun - hope to see you there!
Changes with Volunteer Memberships
We are so pleased to announce the next steps we are taking to make our volunteer experience equitable for all. It has always been our goal to include our volunteers in our membership experience, hence our desire for volunteers to become members when they are able.

We know, however, that this is a barrier for some people - which had never been our intention. As part of our Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) work at the Garden, we have reframed this membership requirement.

Pay-What-You-Can memberships will be available for all volunteers. No one will be turned away due to low income or economic hardship! Pay-What-You-Can Members will receive full Avid Gardener benefits so long as they are maintaining an active volunteer role.

While we are still expecting all volunteers to become members, we are hopeful that waiving this paid requirement will lead to a more inclusive Garden and more diverse group of volunteers.

Volunteers are welcome and encouraged to sign-up for whatever membership level they feel best aligns with their need and desire. Throughout the years we have had many volunteers contribute significant donations to the Garden and we cannot express enough how grateful we are for this support.

However you are able to support us at SFBG, we are so thankful for you! We are always celebrating this incredible volunteer community. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Library Volunteer
The Library Team is looking to expand. The library has been open on Fridays and Saturdays for some time now, but they are now open on Sundays and Mondays as well! The team is in search of Sunday and Monday volunteers specifically. Library shifts are from 10am-1pm, or 1pm-4pm. Join our Library Team to help welcome the public back into this wonderful quiet space!

First time library volunteers can email volunteer@sfbg.org to get started.

Plant Arbor
The Plant Arbor is looking for some more help on Saturdays. Arbor volunteers have the opportunity to learn all about the different plants we sell, helping guests find the perfect one for their garden at home. Plant experience preferred, but not required! Through training and time you will learn all you need to know about the plants we have.

First time arbor volunteers can email volunteer@sfbg.org to get started.

Special Opportunity: Inventory of Bed Markers
The Plant Collections Team has a unique volunteer opportunity. They are searching for 1-2 volunteers to assist them with taking inventory of the bed markers around the Garden. This project is pretty straightforward and will involve walking around the Garden, looking at a paper map of the Garden, assessing the quality of the bed marker in each location.

This project is envisioned to be a once-a-week opportunity for however long you are willing to spend on it! Tory will orient you to the project and be on site for questions, but the intention is for you to work independently.

Does this sound like something you're interested in? Email Tory for more information!

Green Team in Action

Thank you so much to our Green Team volunteers who have been so flexible, particularly during these last few months of the pandemic with our added restrictions. We are pleased to announce the following changes to Green Team:
  • Joining Multiple Teams: The horticulture team is grateful for everyone adjusting to the One Team rule for the past couple of months. We are excited to say you are once again permitted to sign-up for multiple Green Teams with different horticulture leads! That said, please keep in mind that the group size for these Green Teams will not be expanding, so spots are still limited. Please be sure to only sign up for shifts you know you will attend, so other people who are interested and able to volunteer can join as well. Thank you!

  • New Green Team: The horticulture team is thrilled that horticulturist Yianni Gogonas will be leading a new Green Team. Yianni's Green Team will meet Thursdays at the shed at 9:45am and will work in Mesoamerica. You can sign-up for Yianni's Green Team here

Slices of Joy

  • The Board of Supervisors passed the ordinance regarding admission fees at the Gardens of Golden Gate Park - meaning all three Gardens (SFBG, Japanese Tea Garden, and Conservatory of Flowers) will be free to SF residents, and veterans/military regardless of residency - effective Friday, April 22nd, 2022!

  • Through a consortium of botanical and horticultural libraries, our Library now provides access to a collection of over 7,000 eBooks for staff and Garden members. eBook subject areas include horticulture, gardening, natural history, botany, garden design, landscape architecture, and more. Ebooks are listed in the library catalog and details are at sfbg.org/ebooks

  • The next phase of our Magnolia Grafting Project is starting next week! Our expert grafter, Leanne Kenealy will be visiting for a week and she will be collecting Magnolia cuttings from our collection, Huntington Library, UC Botanical Garden, and Sonoma Botanic Garden. In total we are hoping to collect cuttings of 70 accessions from our California partners, and the lists are still growing for our partner gardens out of state!
We hope your Spring is off to a wonderful start!
Warmly,
Jenn
