Cyclospora testing update and new laboratory ordering guidance
As Cyclospora cases continue to increase across Ohio and the Midwest, Dayton Children's wants to ensure referring providers have the latest testing guidance.
Our laboratory's Gastrointestinal Infectious Disease Panel (GIDP) includes PCR testing for Cyclospora cayetanensis, providing results in approximately 24 hours. Importantly, routine ova and parasite (O&P) testing do not detect Cyclospora, making the GIDP the preferred diagnostic test for patients with suspected infection.
Please share this reminder with providers and clinical staff:
-
Order the Gastrointestinal Infectious Disease Panel (GIDP) for suspected Cyclospora infections.
- Routine O&P testing will not identify Cyclospora.
- Collect stool in a clean refrigerated container or C&S transport media.
- Contact the Dayton Children's Clinical Laboratory with questions at 937-641-5100.

Improving Access, One Prescription at a Time
|
|
|
|
Meet Rebekah “Becky” Baron, CPNP, at Dayton Children’s Pulmonary Clinic, where providers are continually looking for ways to remove barriers to care and make it easier for families to manage chronic conditions. Becky is leading by example through a simple but impactful practice change -- prescribing 90-day supplies of asthma controller medications whenever clinically appropriate.
By prescribing a 90-day supply, Becky is helping families:
- Improve medication adherence by reducing refill interruptions
- Decrease trips to the pharmacy, saving families time and effort
- Reduce the risk of running out of medication
- Support better asthma control through consistent access to controller therapies
-
Minimize barriers for families facing transportation or scheduling challenges
This approach is an excellent reminder that small changes can have a big impact. Providers are encouraged to consider prescribing 90-day supplies of asthma controller medications, when clinically appropriate to help improve medication access and continuity of care. If your organization is eligible for the Partners For Kids Provider Incentive Program (PIP), your organization will also receive an incentive for each prescription filled.
