SANTA FE PREP ARTS SHINE BRIGHT!
A wildly, spirited Griffin CONGRATULATIONS to the cast of MAMMA MIA! who were awarded BEST ENSEMBLE (out of 13 schools) at this year's New Mexico High School Musical Theater Enchantment Awards!

Performing Arts Chair Brad Fairbanks shares, "I was told numerous times by the co-producers of the event how every single one of you (the cast) gave your all in performance. They were moved by everyone, from leads to chorus...I could not be any prouder than I am of the Mamma Mia! cast and this award showed you are a CAST!! Thank you all for giving us your talent and, more important, your willingness to work together!!"

Our Visual and Performing Arts Departments brought forth strong representation at the ISAS ARTS FESTIVAL 2019 in Austin,Texas last month. According to Visual Arts Chair Alex Peña, "It was again one of the strongest showings at the festival that included over 40 schools...it was great to celebrate all of our students’ accomplishments—both performing and visual contingents—with such wonderful and talented colleagues!"

Performing Arts Chair Brad Fairbanks adds, "Barrett Vimont '19 directed the one act Almost Maine and it was a huge hit with the audience and the adjudicator! There were 10 actors in it and they all nailed their parts. Scenes and monologues were strong too. All the students we took were amazing—on time for all events and morning calls—and they were very respectful to folks at St. Stephen's Episcopal School and all of us tired chaperones. Great trip!"

And in other Santa Fe Prep Performing Arts news, congratulations to the cast of Into the Woods Jr.! These Middle School Performing Arts class students presented a knock-out version of a journey into a fantastically chilling story of all of your favorite childhood fairy tale characters. Stay tuned for pics from this fun musical, which will be posted on the Santa Fe Prep Facebook page soon!
ATHLETIC NEWS
The Girls Lacrosse team finished the league season undefeated in New Mexico. They opened the state tournament with a decisive victory, beating Rio Rancho 17-3, and played Duke City for the state championship, resulting in a 7th straight victory.

The Boys Lacrosse team finished their league play in third place with a fantastic 10-3 record. Their first-round match in the state tournament was in Texas, where they beat a feisty Midland team, 10-6. They also played Duke City for the state championship, unfortunately losing a heartbreaker in overtime.

The Baseball team finished up their regular season with a doubleheader against St. Mike's. Although their win-loss record is not in their favor, the team improved immensely over the season. Pitcher Brian Kice '22 was interviewed by J.P. Murrieta for an NMAA feature. Click here to view.

Boys and Girls Tennis competed in the team portion of the district tournament, where the girls unfortunately lost in the first round. The boys, however, led by senior Joe Matthews, beat Española and Desert Academy to take third place. Both teams then competed in Taos for the individual portion of the district tournament. Grace Vivian '22 and Isabel Vionescu '22 (pictured here) had a great event and qualified as the #2 seed doubles team for the state tournament. The freshmen dynamic duo built on the momentum and outlasted the competition to earn a state championship!
The Track team had three individuals honored with bids to compete in the Marilyn Sepulveda Invitational Meet. Sean Coles '19 placed 5th in the high jump; Hayden Colfax '20 finished 3rd in the triple jump with a new school record (37 feet 7 3/4 inches), and took 1st in the 100-meter hurdles; and Sam Sparks '19 took 4th in the long jump and set a new school record in the 200-meter run (22.77 seconds), finishing first. At the district championships, both boys and girls teams placed second, with unbelievable performances by both teams and many personal records achieved. Kudos to the boys and girls 4 x 400 meter relays, taking 1st place in the last event of the meet. The state qualifiers then competed at UNM for the state championship, where both teams earned 3rd place trophies and Hayden Colfax '20 earned high point honors.
Fisher Hirsch '22 secured the first district championship in golf in the school’s history by shooting an 81 on the Gene Torres course in Las Vegas, NM. Fisher bested the 2nd place golfer by four strokes and headed to Hobbs to compete in the state championship, where he finished in 8th place.

Middle School Golf wrapped their season with the APIAL Championships in Albuquerque. The coed team had an outstanding competition and narrowly missed a podium finish by taking 4th place.

Congratulations to all our Blue Griffin athletes for a fantastic spring sports season!

AROUND & ABOUT
On May 6, the 7th grade released about 80 trout that they raised in tanks in the Middle School Science Lab. Learning about the chemistry of the water in the tank was a critical part of keeping the fish alive, along with calibrating the amount to feed. Eggs were intitially delivered by the New Mexico Department of Fish and Game in January and within a week, the lifecycle of the trout was at the alevin stage (about 1 inch long), and eventually the fry stage (3.5 inches), when they were released into the Pecos River.

The day at the river also included activities in nature journaling, birding, water testing, a visit to the hatchery, and an invertebrate lab led by Trout Unlimited volunteers and the NM Fish and Game. It was a great day on the river releasing the fish into the wild.

Santa Fe Prep hosts both a Middle and Upper School GSA which offers emotional and peer support for queer and questioning youth, and the group recently sponsored a delegation of middle and high school students from around Santa Fe to participate in a fieldtrip to the Mountain Center. Students participated in icebreaker games and high-ropes course activities. It was a great opportunity to connect with other GSA students from around the city and make new friends. It also offered our own students a chance to get to know each other better, and the risk and reward of challenging themselves on the climbing wall built self-confidence and courage. We look forward to our school's continued GSA leadership in years to come.
A delegation of Santa Fe Prep high school students attended the first-ever New Mexico Diversity Conference for Youth in Albuquerque recently. After an inspiring keynote from Native poet Tanaya Winder, author of Revolution is Love, students attended workshops that included topics such as A Day in the Life of an Undocumented Student, A Forum for LGBTQ+ Students, and Racism and The New Anti-Semitism. Students then described powerful discussions in their respective workshops and excitement for new peer connections from around the state; they finished the day exhausted and inspired, dancing to local favorite band Nosotros.
Middle and upper school students recently attended a Cyber Safety presentation by the State of New Mexico Office of the Attorney General. In the ever-changing landscape of cyber technology, it can be difficult for schools and parents alike to keep up with the impact this terrain has on our youth. To this end, we aspire to create thoughtful and kind digital citizens through our life skills and health classes, guest speakers, and integrated classroom curriculum.

The AG's presentation covered several topics your child may want to discuss more at home with you, including: cyberbullying, sexting, online predators, gaming, rideshare apps, social media exclusion, and suicide. Because we know not all parents are experts in cyber safety (yet!), we want to share a few resources with you that may help. Click here for specific guidance for parents approved by the Office of the Attorney General. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need help thinking about how to talk to your teen about cyber safety.

Congratulations Nandita Ganesan '24, who placed 2nd out of a group of 21 qualified contestants from NM and AZ at the USA Climbing Regional Competition in Albuquerque! Nandita now moves on to the divisional competition in Cypress, TX taking place on June 15.

This is her highest placement, to date, in a regional competition. She thanks her school and all her teachers for their encouragement and the accommodations they provided during her competitions and training sessions.

Our Parents' Association Rummage Sale was a huge success, netting over $20,000 for Breakthrough Santa Fe and tuition assistance at Santa Fe Prep!  A huge shout out to all of our volunteers (not all pictured here—over 80 people!!) who helped move, organize, fold, price, and count. Thank you!!

- Julie Murray and Abigail Olson, Rummage Chairs

English teacher Sarah Stark will be attending an artist's residency this June at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Monaghan County, Ireland, working to complete her graphic memoir. The centre was founded by the visionary theatre maker William Tyrone Guthrie who, with the advice and encouragement of his family, bequeathed his entire estate and family home to the state with the proviso that it would be used for the benefit of artists. Congratulations, Sarah!

UPCOMING EVENTS
The History and English Departments invite you to spend an evening celebrating the academic accomplishments of your students at Tenth Grade Intersections Night on Tuesday, May 21 from 5:00–7:00 pm in classrooms around our Upper School Quad.

Throughout the year, students immersed themselves in independent research on topics spanning an array of diverse areas. They developed and applied research skills and strategies, chose and read literature thematically linked to their topics, and created artistic representations of the personal, historical, literary, and global connections. The result is a veritable cornucopia of scintillating thought and collaborations on display. We hope to see you!
Courtesy of Santa Fe Prep's Convergence Project TAP, the Oasis Festival is an annual for-teens, by-teens community music event showcasing several different local youth acts and one national headliner.  This year, we are welcoming Cherry Glazerr as our national headliner; there will also be local acts and dancers, including special performances from Wise Fool. We hope to see you on Sunday, May 26, at the Santa Fe Railyard Plaza from 3:00–9:00 pm!
