Welcome College & Career Counselor/OIS
Estela Gerlinger!

Please join us in welcoming Estela Gerlinger to the Falcon Family as our new OIS/College & Career Counselor! Ms. Gerlinger recently relocated to the area from Lake Tahoe, Nevada. A graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno where she earned her Master’s Degree in School Counseling and Educational Psychology, she is a Nationally Certified School Counselor with over 12 years of experience helping students plan for life after high school. Because she understands the dynamics that go into making those decisions, in her previous position, she developed a College and Career Planning Seminar course that helps students explore, determine, and get ready for their chosen careers.
Ms. Gerlinger finds great pleasure in connecting with and learning from all students as she helps them find their passion. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her son Barrett and his dad Rhett, experimenting in the kitchen, and a nice easy paddle on her SUP. She looks forward to meeting and working with our students, parents, guardians, and learning community!
Ms. Gerlinger can be reached at egerlinger@nsd.org.

Apply for Free & Reduced Price Meals Today!

While Northshore is currently providing free meals, this support is made possible by temporary USDA funding. If this funding changes, the District may be required to charge families based on their current eligibility for meals. Have you applied for free and reduced-price meals this year?
If your family qualified last year, you need to reapply this year to ensure that your student receives free or reduced price meals once the current free meals program ends. It is important to apply today so that your eligibility status doesn’t lapse. If an application is not in process for a returning student by October 14, 2020, the student’s account will automatically be transferred to a paid account on the next school day. Please know that the number of eligible students for free and reduced price meals connects to the District’s Title I funding, which provides additional support at schools to help students succeed. Additionally, if your family income has decreased, you may be eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.
In addition to receiving free or reduced-price meals, your eligibility also provides
  • Reduced fee for Camp Cedar Spring
  • Reduced fee for PSAT and Advanced Placement Testing
  • Reduced fee for sports/athletics
  • Reduced fee for summer school
  • Access to Backpack Program, which provides backpacks and school supplies
  • Access to Operation School Bell, which provides clothes and personal products

To find out if you are eligible and to apply online visit our website.

Permission to Withhold Student Directory
Information: Due October 15

Annually, the District provides an opportunity for families to opt out of releasing their student’s directory information. Historically, this has been a paper form that families return to their school’s main office. This year, we’ve transitioned the form online!
  • Families can choose to complete the form entirely online, print the form or complete it via a fillable PDF and email a copy back to their school’s office, or request a paper copy to complete.
  • In all of these cases, you are not required to send or take a paper form back to your student's school during this pandemic.
  • Should you decide to complete the form, selecting one of the "opt-out" options for your student's information, we encourage you to follow up with your school's office to confirm your form was received. Forms must be submitted by October 15.
  • Forms will be accepted after the deadline, but the District cannot be responsible for the release of Directory Information if the Permission to Withhold Student Directory Information form is received after the October 15 deadline of the current school year.
Student Work Permit Signatures!
Is your student working this year and in need of their Work Permit Signed? If so, please have them contact their WHS Counselor via email and they can help get this signed for them.

WHS Counseling email addresses can be found on the WHS Homepage under Counseling.

PSAT/NMSQT

Each year in the Northshore School District, high schools administer the PSAT to 10th and 11th graders (and a very few 9th graders who opt in) in October. This year, as you may expect, is very different due to the ongoing pandemic.
As of September 1st, the College Board is not offering an online PSAT and is still requiring on-site, in person testing which is not conducive with our current NSD 3.0 Learning Model. In communicating the situation with the College Board, they recently gave us this information: “We understand many schools are utilizing virtual instruction options and that plans continue to evolve this fall. For schools that are unable to administer the PSAT/NMSQT in October, College Board will also be offering the PSAT/NMSQT this winter, which will be used for programs administered by National Merit Scholarship Corporation."
Once more is known about the Winter Administration of the PSAT, we will advise. PSAT information is posted on the WHS website under Academics, Assessments.

2022 National Merit Scholarship Program Options

As previously announced, the College Board is not offering an online PSAT/NMSQT exam, which is not conducive with our current NSD 3.0 Learning Model. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Friday, September 25, 2020 that a junior who does not take the PSAT/NMSQT in October 2020 or January 2021 because of illness, an emergency, or other extenuating circumstance (including school closures), but meets all other requirements for NMSC program participation, may still be able to enter the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program by submitting scores from an administration of the SAT. The student or a school official must visit www.nationalmerit.org/resources after the missed PSAT/NMSQT administration to download information about procedures for Alternate Entry to the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. To be considered, a student must complete certain requirements before April 1, 2021.
IMPORTANT: Alternate Entry is only for juniors who do not take the October 2020 PSAT/NMSQT or January 2021 PSAT/NMSQT. Students who are uncertain about whether they will take the January PSAT/NMSQT are welcome to download and complete Alternate Entry requirements beginning in late October; however, NMSC will not consider a student’s SAT scores for entry to the program if it receives an official PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score from College Board.
NOTE: The procedure described above for requesting Alternate Entry differs from information that is published in the PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide.  For the 2022 competition only, students and school officials will be able to download Alternate Entry instructions from NMSC’s website instead of submitting an individual written request to NMSC for approval.

Additional Information

For more details about entry to the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program, please refer to the PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide or visit www.nationalmerit.org.
