Each year, the DAAPworks event highlights the creative output of the graduating class from the top-ranked College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati.

DAAP Fashion Show
April 28th, 2023, 7:30 pm

Unique creations from our 48 exceptionally talented senior designers will be showcased at MegaCorp Pavillion, an amazing indoor/outdoor concert venue adjacent to Newport on the Levy in northern Kentucky, minutes from downtown Cincinnati. Various seating opportunities, 3 bars, high-tech lighting and sound, a live DJ, and 30+ models showcasing 200 one-of-a-kind designs. Tickets availalbe now.

UC Design for America Meetup

UC Design for America hosted students, faculty, and alumni from DFA studios around the region for the Midwest Meetup 2023 on March 31st - April 2nd. During the weekend-long conference, attendees participated in design workshops, expert speaker panels, and a design sprint about food access solutions. Design for America is a national organization that promotes design thinking for social good.

3D Body Scanner

The Fashion Design Program has installed a 3D body scanner in the photo lab as a part of the Ohio Worker Safety and Innovation Center (OWSIC) research project funded by the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC). The scanner is a fashion-specific body scanner, measuring over 150 body points in 30 seconds creating OBJ and FBX files. The 3D body scanner is dedicated to the research project currently, however, the scanner will be open to faculty and students to support their research and teaching after the completion of the OWSIC project. 
Visible Language
The Graduate College announced the competition for a limited number of Editorial Assistance Awards for the 2023-24 academic year. Visible Language has been awarded support by the UC Editorial Assistance Awards selection committee, at the level of a graduate assistantship for the 2023-24 academic year. This is the highest award the UC Graduate College offers and will fund this assistantship, which includes a stipend during the academic year. 
Visible Language is the oldest peer-reviewed design journal. Published by the Myron E. Ullman Jr. School of Design at the University of Cincinnati, Visible Language balances artfulness with science, innovation with respect for human patterns of use, evidence-based research with intuitive exploration, and technology with humanity.

STUDENT & ALUMNI ACCOLADES

  • Student project, GardenSpace with Eden, from Heekyoung Jung's Junior Collaborative Studio (Intelligent Product System Design: More Than Human Approach) has been selected as one of the 24 finalists in the 2023 IxDA Interaction Awards. 2022 Alums Yuxuan Chen - Graphic Designer, Ian Ferguson - Industrial Designer, Clara Listerman - Industrial Designer, and Bethany Moore, Graphic Designer. Winners will be announced May 6, 2023. 
  • The ISDA Student Merit Awards were held March 22nd, 2023 where exceptional DAAP students present their portfolios. A panel of local judges select a finalist from UC DAAP to compete at the District level. The winner of each of the five Districts is celebrated at the International Design Conference, which provides students with a valuable platform to boost their careers. Congratulations to first place winner Kennedy Wilson-Houck!

  • MDes graduate Siyi Zhu published a paper with Danny Wu, Associate Professor of Research, COM Biomedical Informatics.

  • DAAPX is a celebration of alumni accomplishments and a showcase of diverse projects and experiences across all majors and degrees. Several School of Design alum returned to the University of Cincinnati March 3rd, 2023 and gave presentations at this year's DAAPx: Symposium on Experiential Design.

Professor Burke made a paper presentation at the peer-reviewed panel, From my Window: Explorations in Texts and Images, at CAA’s 111th Annual Conference in New York, NY. 

Yong-Gyun Ghim

Assistant Professor, Industrial Design

MDes student Domagoj Bui and Professor Ghim's paper about Industrial Design Guidelines for Robot Acceptance was accepted for publication in the Applied Human Factors & Ergonomics (AHFE) 2023 Conference proceedings books. The conference will be held in San Fransico July 20-24, 2023. 

Ali Ilhan

Adjunct Professor, Industrial Design

Published by Fol, Ali Ilhan with Arsev Umur Aydinoglu have written the book "Herkes İçin Bilim, Teknoloji ve Toplum: Nedir Bu Bilim ve Teknoloji Çalışmaları?" which translates to "Science, Technology and Society for All: What is Science and Technology Studies?" Intended for a broad audience, this book is a gentle introduction to burgeoning interdisciplinary field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). It is one of the first such attempts in Turkish. Starting from the “pre-history” of STS with a focus on thinkers such as Karl Popper and Kuhn, it covers a wide range of frameworks such as the Strong Program, Laboratory Studies, Social Construction of Technology (SCOT), Actor Network Theory, Feminist STS and Sociology of Expertise.

Professor, Assistant Professor & Associate Professor of Practice,
Fashion Design

Faculty in the Fashion Design Program have published a comprehensive patternmaking book for women’s wear, men’s wear, and children’s wear, entitled “Apparel Design Through Patternmaking” with Fairchild Books, Bloomsbury Publishing Inc. ISBN: 978-1501360237. Fairchild Books is a world-leading publisher in the fields of fashion and interior design. The book has been available since last October and the accompanying Studio Access Card is now available. 

Ashley Kubley

Associate Professor, Fashion Design

Dean Jachna selected Ashley Kubley as a recipient of the Faculty-to-Faculty Research Mentoring Award. This award, co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Office of Research, honors faculty who have demonstrated excellence in peer mentoring for advancing research. Ashley received professional development funds to support teaching, research, and/or service efforts. 

Reneé Seward

Reneé's company See Word Design's mission is to help every individual learn how to read. She recently announced the company received its first patent for their literacy fonts. Congratulations to Reneé and her team for all their hard work! 
Kristina Shin 
Assistant Professor, Fashion Design
Kristina and her team's project entitled "Development of a Hemostatic Vest for Patients with Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices: A Multidisciplinary Approach" has been selected as one of the eight 22-23 Office of Research Collaborative Research Advancement: Pilot Grants Awardees! Congratulations to Kristina and her team for this accomplishment given the extremely high quality and competitive nature of this program.
