The Office of Sustainability wrapped up the first phase of its inaugural Climate Fellowship in June. Partnering with the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, the program facilitated a Living Campus study abroad experience in Spain and Portugal to support sustainability initiatives on campus. Students collaborated with local universities on sustainable transportation, biodiversity, renewable energy, sustainable procurement, rural community engagement, and city planning.

Dr. Jennifer Chirico, associate vice president of sustainability, led a module on best practices for reducing emissions and ensuring sustainable energy, water, and waste infrastructure through lectures and field trips. Dr. Kirk Bowman, professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, led additional modules on comparative politics, sustainable tourism, and community resiliency. 

Following the study abroad portion, students will join the Office of Sustainability's first Living Campus Fellowship beginning in fall 2024 to apply what they learned to the Georgia Tech campus. Fellowship projects, aligned with the Climate Action Plan strategies, include:

Senior Director of Institutional Research and Planning and triple Jacket Jason Wang has helped the Office of Sustainability and Sustainability Next collect data for numerous projects, including serving on the team for the The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™ (STARS®) Report for over a year. His contributions have enabled consistent reporting for better decision-making across the Institute.

Georgia Tech is one of only 21 centers worldwide, reflecting a continued commitment to incorporating sustainability education through courses and co-curricular experiences.

From bringing green building concepts to places of worship to protecting native species on campus, the Kendeda Fellows and student assistants who support the Office of Sustainability make positive impacts in their communities.
