What I’m Working On: Wang Mingyuan Talks Cryptography
Wang Mingyuan studied mathematics until he discovered cryptography at graduate school at Purdue University. Coached by some of the world’s top minds in the field, Wang has made cryptography a lifelong academic pursuit. This fall he joined NYU Shanghai as an assistant professor of computer science.

• The 13th Conference on Computational Statistical Mechanics of Complex Systems was held at NYU Shanghai from November 15-17. The event brought together over 150 researchers and students for a dynamic series of activities, including invited talks, lightning talks, and a poster session, covering cutting-edge topics such as statistical mechanics, excited-state processes, quantum dynamics of complex systems, and the statistical properties of biological and material systems.
• Barry Melancon, CEO of the global accounting body AICPA & CIMA, visited NYU Shanghai for an inspiring talk on the future of finance, highlighting the trends shaping the industry, from AI and big data to sustainability and global trade. The talk was hosted by NYU Shanghai CFO Helen Hu and Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen gave opening remarks.
• Renowned Chinese financial writer and breast cancer survivor Ye Tan, joined a bilingual discussion with two doctors from Ruijin Hospital and Shanghai East Hospital on breast cancer awareness. The talk was hosted by Clinical Assistant Professor of History Wen Shuang as part of the Pink Hope initiative. Tan Ye shared her personal journey battling cancer in recent years. The two medical experts emphasized the importance of regular self-examinations and timely medical checkups, noting that early-stage breast cancer is highly manageable with prompt intervention.
• Students reeled us into their NYU Shanghai lives for the 2nd annual “Reel” Deal Challenge, a social media video competition hosted and judged by University Communications. Congrats to our 1st place winners Maureen Li '28 and Herbein Wang ’28, 2nd place winner Zyton Lu ’28, 3rd place winner Gabriel Ferreira ’28, and Ermune Munkhbayar ’28, whose video was voted “Most Popular” at the screening and award ceremony! The Road of LoveTwo NYU Shanghai student volunteers welcomed a young boy and his dad at Shanghai Indoor Stadium as part of the 2024 "Walk the Road of Love" on November 16. The event was held in partnership with Special Olympics Young Athletes and featured a walk through Shanghai, ending at NYU Shanghai’s campus gymnasium for fun and games.

NYU Alumni and Faculty Receive 2025 Grammy Nominations
NYU alumni and faculty received 17 nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards, including four of the six nominees for Best Musical Theater Album. Other nominations for Violet faculty and alums were in major categories including Song of the Year, Rap Song, Rock Song, and Children’s Music Album.
