Like a Kid on Christmas Morning

One of our many time-honored A Longwood Christmas traditions is our Children’s Trees display, where we adorn cut trees with beautiful, imaginative ornaments created by local school kids. This year, we invited our Members to create ornaments with the children in their lives for this Nectarine House display, inspired by the theme “how children imagine a Christmas tree.”
We’ve been delighted to receive such creative and inspiring ornaments from our Members, with each ornament truly illustrating the magic of the season. Thanks to these masterpieces, we’ve adorned our Children’s Trees with ornaments crafted from jewels and beads to flowers and ribbon, in subjects ranging from a chicken to the solar system and a bird’s nest to a snowman.

Delve into Gardens History

Christmas was an important and festive holiday for founder Pierre S. du Pont and his wife Alice, made evident by the annual Christmas party they held for staff and their families in the Conservatory beginning in the early 1920s. These beloved parties included entertainment, refreshments, and generous gifts of food, money, clothing, and toys for the staff and their families …  and a version of these parties continues today.
After Mr. du Pont passed away in 1954, the spirit of the holidays continued with the opening of “Christmas Tree Lane,” a drive-through experience of about 61,000 lights that continued through the early 1980s. Each year, more and more trees were adorned with more and more lights, until A Longwood Christmas was officially moved inside the Gardens and became the magical season we know and love today.

This week, delight in the story shared by Member Babette B.:
My Mom’s birthday was on September 13, in honor of her we were requested by my sister and my niece to give her the gift of time. I asked her if she would like to take a ride and see the leaves, they had just started in Western PA. She asked where would you like to go and I suggested PA, she replied with “let’s go to Longwood Gardens.” I grew up in a family business so we weren’t able to travel a lot together as one of us would stay and run the business so this was a special time for me. Over the years my Mom has frequented the Gardens with her friend Cheryl, her fiancée Bud, as well as other family members. We would drive to PA every summer in August to visit my Aunt Margaret and she would share her slides from Longwood Gardens. My first experience to visit with my Mom was this past October and what a beautiful and breathtaking experience! My Mom was the tour guide and she didn’t need the map; she navigated us through quite well like a professional! I can’t wait to go back for the Christmas lights, decorations, and flower presentation. She will be receiving a Membership gift for Christmas! So happy I finally was able to visit!
