Coronavirus impact and updates

One of the more recent impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has taken everyone by surprise, is the shortage of coins.  Yes - that form of cash that is the least favored by most everyone; quarters, dimes, nickels, and even pennies.
As the country reopens, financial institutions are increasing their orders of coins, reducing the Fed's inventory below normal levels.  Due to the pandemic and the closure of bars and restuarants that receive coins from consumers, and the temporary shuttering of many bank branches, the Fed is not receiving as many coins back from financial institutions.  And mint production is down due to work restrictions.  Allocation went into effect on June15th.
Bank notes, on the other hand, remain in plentiful supply.  ATM operators, financial institutions and independents alike, are reporting surges in cash demand.  After the fear-mongering over the safety of cash a couple months ago, the use of cash seems to be getting back to normal.
Following the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and taking into account the results of the member survey in April 2020, including the list of pain points experienced by members during the crisis, ATMIA announced last month its committment to a broad, global ATM and Cash Revival Plan.
As part of that revival plan, the ATM Hygiene & Safety Committee held its first meeting last month.  Its mission is to create protocols and best practices for ATM cleaning and hygiene.  ATMIA will also develop a webpage with a showroom for cleaning and “added hygiene” technologies.
ATMIA continues to update its Coronavirus page on our website.  That includes daily reports on how the states are handling their response.  Check the News Feed section of that page late in the afternoon for the most current information.

Cashless ban updates

The latest hearing on California's SB 926, which would require retail locations to accept cash payments of up to $5,000, was held on June 18.  The measure  was previously passed out of the Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee and referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee.  Text of the amended measure is available from the interactive map on the ATMIA U.S. Region home page.
Although Senators Cramer and Menendez introduced a companion bill, S 4145, to the Payment Choice Act on July 1, the text of the bill has still not been provided.
Meanwhile, H.R. 2650 has not seen any further movement, but now has 41 co-sponsors, 10 of which are from the Republican side.  ATMIA members are encouraged to contact their Representative and Senators and ask that they also become a co-sponsor of these bills.

Washington, DC Fly-in cancelled due to the pandemic

Washington, DC is opening up far more slowly than first anticipated.  And the future state of local unrest there is uncertain at this point.  Therefore, regrettably, it has become necessary to cancel the 2020 fly-in event.  Even if the situation were to have improved, it is quite likely that legislators and staff will continue to be preoccupied with current events and unavailable for non-related discussions.
Planning for our 2021 DC Fly-in is already well underway.  Wednesday, March 24, 2021 has been confirmed as our day on Capitol Hill.  Our strategy meeting will take place March 23rd at 5:00pm ET.
We are looking for a Fly-In Sponsor! This is a great opportunity to host a very visible and important advocacy event – and give your organization some unique exposure for the next eight months.
For more information about sponsoring or participating in the Fly-In, contact David Tente.

Committee Updates

Check out what's happening with our committee groups:

New Software Distribution Forum

A Software Packaging & Distribution Work Group was formed late last year upon requests from a couple of our larger bank ATM deployers.  As ATM software has grown more complex, security concerns multiplied, and functionality expanded to enhance the customer experience, the task of managing software distribution has become very challenging.  Manufacturers and larger deployers are managing thousands of USB sticks and looking for better ways to deliver updates and reload hard drives.
This discussion forum has been created as a vehicle for sharing best practices and new ideas for simplifying the packaging and distribution of ATM software.  The Forum is open to all ATMIA members, but will probably be of most interest to banks, larger independent deployers, and manufacturers. For more information, contact David Tente.

New ATM Hygiene and Safety Committee

ATMIA has created a new international committee to look at best practices for ATM hygiene and cleaning for the pandemic and post-pandemic phases for the industry. Through collaboration and consultation with our members we’ll develop international best practices. We will do our work through conference calls and email, and no in-person meetings or travel will be required.  The group's first meeting was earlier this week and very well attended.
If you wish to be part of this important new initiative, contact Mike Lee to be added to the committee list, or add it to the Committee Preferences in your account, to receive an invitation for the next conference call.

Organizers are also being sought for Preconference Workshops on select topics that require a more detailed and interactive discussion.  These are 3-hour sessions during our Pre-Conference Day, prior to the official start of the conference and typically involve multiple speakers.  Suggested topics for 2021 include recycling, outsourcing, and progress with biometrics.
The deadline for our "Call for Speakers" has been extended to July 23, 2020.  Please respond to this “Call for Speakers” by completing a proposal form.

Hyosung has continuously invested in R&D to develop cutting-edge technology, while improving customer satisfaction through dedicated services, to become the best in the world.  They built their first computer manufacturing factory in Korea in 1979 and have strived ever since to maintain a strong commitment to innovation in their financial product and service offerings.  Hyosung is an ATMIA Global Sponsor and one of its most loyal members, having first joined in 2002.
Hyosung retail sales director, Marvin Bowers commented further about the value they find in ATMIA membership and conferences:
"A major benefit of ATMIA membership is being able to share innovation, ideas, and trends in our industry in a community environment. The platform that ATMIA provides is a great basis point for all types of vendors, customers, and end users to meet and share openly without an ulterior agenda- it is a great place to build credibility with one another and learn!
We are a major sponsor at most ATMIA events and find value in the ability to show off new products and services. But, the connection with the market is the most important benefit at the events- to be able to see the hard work our company puts into research and development appreciated by the actual customers in a relaxed setting is amazing."
