SHSU Secures Several USDA PPA Awards |
Sam Houston State University continues to expand its impact in agricultural and environmental research, securing seven awards through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Plant Protection Act (PPA) Program for Fiscal Year 2024.
These grants, totaling $410,526, support projects aimed at safeguarding plant health, preventing the introduction of invasive pests and diseases, and strengthening domestic agricultural systems.
As SHSU researchers continue to engage in impactful work within plant health and biosecurity, these awards reinforce the university’s growing role in supporting national agricultural priorities.

From Draft to Submission: COE Faculty Advance Grant Proposals |
The Grant Writing Circle, a collaborative initiative between ORSP and the College of Education (COE), recently provided faculty with dedicated time and support to develop competitive grant proposals.
This session brought together researchers working on their applications with a diverse team of experts, including ORSP’s Compliance and Submissions & Awards staff, as well as specialists from the Newton Gresham Library and COE offering guidance on data management and evaluation strategies.
Through hands-on feedback, one-on-one consultations, and structured writing time, participants refined their proposals while addressing key elements such as budgeting, compliance requirements, and effective data organization.
The Grant Writing Circle continues to serve as a valuable resource, equipping faculty with the tools and support needed to strengthen their grant applications and increase funding success.

New Cayuse IRB Resources Now Available for Faculty and Students |
Faculty and students navigating SHSU’s Cayuse IRB system now have access to two new resources designed to enhance understanding and streamline the submission process for Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications.
🔹 Cayuse IRB Quick Start Guide – Based on feedback from the Cayuse Satisfaction Survey, this guide provides step-by-step instructions on key system functions, helping users efficiently navigate SHSU’s Human Ethics Submission System. The guide is available for download here.
🔹 Cayuse IRB Training Environment – A new training environment is now available for faculty who wish to train students on navigating the Cayuse system. This educational tool allows users to explore and practice within the system without affecting actual research submissions. Faculty and students can access it using SHSU SSO credentials at https://shsu.uat.cayuse.com/.
These new tools aim to enhance efficiency and confidence when working with IRB submissions at SHSU. For more details, please download the provided Cayuse IRB Quick Start Guide and Training Environment Guide.

Assessment Mini-Grants - Now Accepting Submissions |
The Office of Assessment is now accepting applications for its Assessment Mini-Grant Program for the 2025-2026 academic year. These competitive grants provide funding to faculty and staff at SHSU to support assessment-related activities, including:
✅ New or ongoing assessment practices within programs, offices, or departments
✅ Travel funding to present assessment-related research at professional conferences
📌 Award Amount: Up to $1,000 per recipient
📌 Application Deadline: May 23, 2025
