Kiwi, an AI learning companion built by students and faculty for the NYU community, uses AI to teach AI. Through conversational interactions embedded in real coursework, Kiwi is helping students learn how AI works, and even how to build their own applications.

Yiwu 101: Lessons from the World’s Biggest MarketStudents left their lecture halls for bustling trade halls as they traveled to Yiwu, Zhejiang Province — home to the world’s largest wholesale market. Led by IMB Assistant Professor Nicole Wang, the group embarked on a journey into the heart of global commerce.

The simple principle of convection —warm, lighter fluid rises while cooler, heavier fluid sinks—can lead to surprisingly complex motion, including the formation of large-scale circulation. Assistant Professor of Mathematics Mac Huang explored this problem using a stripped-down model showing behavior resembling real-world systems like weather and ocean currents.

Alumni Voices: Mixing Beats and Business
Helena Ma ’19 has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. After graduation, she worked in multiple industries, from starting a meal kit service in Shanghai during the COVID-19 pandemic to working as a self-taught videographer and photographer. Now an internationally touring DJ and start-up founder, Helena shares with us valuable lessons she’s learned along the way.

• On Wednesday, History Professor and Center for Global Asia Director Tansen Sen gave a lecture on Zheng He, the highest-ranked Chinese eunuch in history, who led seven expeditions to the Indian Ocean Basin and Southeast Asia.
• NYU Shanghai won the Popularity Award and ranked 4th in the Higher Education Exhibition area at the 22nd Shanghai Education Expo. The expo, featuring 130 schools, education institutions, and companies, was held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center in May. An online showcase continued for a month on the Expo mini program.
• The NYU Shanghai community donated over 100 mooncakes to Home Sweet Home, a community organization supporting individuals with special needs. The initiative was organized by Graduate Student Life.
• In the third annual Reel Deal Challenge hosted by University Communications, 20 students submitted creative short films for social media showing their life at NYU Shanghai. Ten films made it to the second round. Congratulations to Messi Mei ’29, Rudy Bhukanwala ’26, Alex Greer ’26 (1st Place winners), Enes Sissenbi ’28 (2nd Place winner), Hannia Colon Valdez ’28 (3rd Place winner), Audrey Ly ’29, Victoria Fu ’29, Fang Xiancheng ’26, Ryan Gu Mingrui ’29, Xeniya Kan ’29, Sean Liu ’29, and Roman O’Brien ’27. NYU Unveils “Torch,” Powerful Supercomputer
NYU newest supercomputer, Torch—marks a new era of advanced research and computation at the university. Torch is New York State’s most powerful and sustainable supercomputer with the ability to do approximately 11 quadrillion calculations per second. It was recently ranked No. 40 on the Top Green 500—a list of the world’s most sustainable supercomputers.

• Winners of 2025 Shanghai International Computational Biology Innovation Competition AnnouncedNYUultra, a team of NYU Shanghai students, won third among 118 teams at an annual contest that invites participants from universities and research institutions in China to use AI to empower biomedicine, Shanghai Securities News reported.
