A Monthly Briefing from Tipping Point
A Monthly Briefing from Tipping Point
All,
As you know, we've been talking a lot about the need to improve public systems and advocate for policy change to combat the crisis of homelessness facing our region. I’m proud to say that our work is underway, and we need your help. Tipping Point is co-sponsoring legislation that, if enacted, will establish a statewide Office of Homeless Youth. Over the past two years, the rate of young people experiencing homelessness in California has jumped by 32%. There is urgent need to address this problem that greatly impacts our efforts to reduce chronic homelessness.
Please read on and share this email with others to keep up to date on this work to reduce chronic homelessness by 50% by 2022.
All my best,

Daniel

Snapshot: Legislation to End Youth Homelessness

California has the highest rate of youth homelessness in the nation. Young people who experience homelessness are five times more likely than their peers to become homeless adults, making it even more imperative to intervene early. In an effort to keep vulnerable young people from slipping into chronic homelessness, Tipping Point is working alongside Assemblywoman Rubio, Senator Wiener, and youth advocate organizations including our grantee, Larkin Street, to co-sponsor Senate Bill 918. This bill will create an Office of Homeless Youth that includes $60 million in funding.

Who's Making It Happen

During his youth, Zak Franet spent time in foster care, juvenile hall, and homeless shelters - instilling within him a passion to improve these public systems for others. He’s been a vocal advocate speaking on behalf of SB918, and serves as a member of the San Francisco Youth Commission, which just sponsored a resolution to help break the cycle of incarceration for transitional-aged youth. Keep an eye on the Tipping Point blog for more on Zak’s story and achievements.

What We're Reading

Nationally, only 25% of former foster care youth attend college, and of those only 1-3% graduate with a four-year degree. The San Francisco State University Guardian Scholars program helps former foster youth every step of the way toward college graduation.
For students involved with this Tipping Point grantee, the graduation rate jumps to almost 70%. Learn more about how SFSU Guardian Scholars co-founders help support former foster youth.

Chronic Homelessness Initiative Overview

There are approximately 2,100 people experiencing chronic homelessness on any given night in San Francisco. Tipping Point’s $100 million pledge marks the single largest private investment to address homelessness in city history.

Tipping Point takes a three-pronged approach to our impact goal. See here for more details. If you are receiving this email as a forward, subscribe here to receive this update monthly.
