Challenges for Privacy and Re-identification with Medical and Genomic Data
Current technologies and practices have created large stores of medical data, including electronic medical records, genomic data, and mobile-health measurements.  There is great promise for discovery and implementation of more efficient and effective health care, but there are also tensions between the sharing of data and the ability to make assurances about security and privacy to patients and study participants.  I will discuss these challenges in the setting of genomic research and medical record data mining.  In many cases, social mechanisms are likely to be the more reliable safeguards than technical mechanisms for privacy, security, and obfuscation. Energy Seminar: Climate-Wise Choices in a World of Oil Abundance
In the last five years, commercial-scale application of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing has opened up large resources of so-called “tight oil”.  At the same time, a decade of investment in unconventional resources such as the Canadian oil sands has allowed production from enormous deposits of low-grade hydrocarbons.  This abundance conflicts with a key long-term challenge: maintaining a stable climate by minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.  How does an era of oil abundance affect the climate challenge? Can we choose wisely among oil resources to minimize climate impacts?  What opportunities exist for oil companies to reduce the impacts of these new resources?  This panel discussion will cover these topics and introduce the “Oil Climate Index”, an open-source effort to model and estimate emissions from global oil resources. Privacy Intern

Privacy is a vast and ever-changing field with many aspects. Online privacy, international privacy, health privacy, children’s privacy, financial privacy, employee privacy, privacy and information security, privacy in contracts and licenses: there are so many areas to understand and learn. At GitHub, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in one or two focus areas or take a holistic approach to learning about how all areas are relevant to a company.
You will be an essential member of the privacy team, and work on the same high-level issues. You’ll research relevant law and policy, present your findings to your manager and the legal team, and potentially help draft policies and procedures that will strengthen the company’s privacy stance.
