Before a Virtual Career Fair- Review your planning checklist. Register early, fill out your profile, and upload your resume as employers may send out information and/or reach out to candidates ahead of time. Familiarize yourself with the virtual platforms and make sure you understand what to expect the day of by watching any tutorials, reviewing any tip sheets, and logging into the platform beforehand. Request any accommodations ahead of time, if needed.
- Research employers beforehand. Virtual career fairs will always provide information about employers before the fair. Click through their profiles to identify what positions you’re interested in applying for, prepare questions to ask, and make a schedule that prioritizes the employers you want to meet (not all employers will be there for the entirety of the fair). By being well informed, you can make sure you’re making the most of your time and theirs.
- Develop and practice your pitch. In a virtual setting, it can be difficult to make an impression. That’s why it’s crucial to get comfortable with your self-introduction so that you can highlight your strengths and articulate your value in a concise way. If you would like employers to remember one thing about you, what would that be, and how is this relevant to their agency or the role you are interested in applying to?
- Start preparing your application materials. This way, you can apply to roles quickly after the fair concludes. Make sure your application materials are tailored toward the positions you are applying for. Have your materials reviewed by CPD if needed. Update your LinkedIn as well; it’s likely that employers will search for you on this platform, so you want to make sure your profile is ready to go.

| During a Virtual Career Fair
- Prepare your space. Try your best to be in a place with reliable internet, prepare your audio and video, make sure your devices are charged, be aware of your surroundings, and present yourself in a way that you would like to be remembered.
- Be relational with your approach. Try approaching meetings with agencies more as open-ended conversations rather than transactional interrogations. Ask informed questions, share ideas, and focus on developing connections. The conversations you will have throughout the day will likely be brief and agencies will be meeting hundreds of students from various schools throughout the day. Think about how you want to engage employers in a meaningful and memorable way.
- Take notes. Write down the names of all the people you meet, collect contact information, and ask what their preference on following up would be (sending an email, applying online, connecting on Linkedin, etc.) Try making a spreadsheet for easy tracking. Additionally, don’t forget to have your resume uploaded to Google Drive and your LinkedIn link nearby for easy sharing when exchanging information with employers.

| After a Virtual Career Fair
- Express gratitude. Send personalized thank you emails to everyone you meet later that day or on the next business day and reference the fair at which you interacted with the employer. If you didn’t catch their contact information, Linkedin is a great way to connect.
- Follow up. For organizations you were interested in applying to, in addition to thanking them, add a couple details from your conversation, reiterate your interest in particular roles, and briefly highlight why you’d be a good fit for them. Don’t forget to attach your application materials.
- Apply. Apply to any roles you are interested in within 24-48 hours. Assume many candidates will be applying for similar roles, so timing is important!Â
