Sofia was a bright and curious preschooler, but the thought of swimming filled her with dread. She would cling tightly to her mother, Brianna, whenever they approached water, her eyes wide with fear. The idea of stepping into a pool, even in the shallowest areas, seemed impossible. However, everything began to change when Sofia started her weekly water safety program through the South Shore YMCA Early Learning Center.
At the Y, young preschoolers trade their classroom shoes for swimsuits once a week, jumping into a world of learning and fun as part of their SSYMCA Early Learning Centers’ water safety enrichment program. For many children, it is their first experience in the water, and a chance to overcome fears, build life skills, and develop lasting friendships.
Sofia's story is a shining example of the program's impact. With the guidance of her instructors and the support of her classmates, Sofia has blossomed into a confident and excited swimmer.
Sofia's mother, Brianna, shared how much the program has helped her daughter grow. "There was a time she wouldn't even let me put her down in water, barely up to her knees. Now, she's more independent, splashing and even floating with help from her instructors."
Every Tuesday, Sofia eagerly packs her swimsuit and heads to swim class, where she loves to play with rubber ducks, practice floating, and share stories of her pool adventures. Her confidence in the water has translated into excitement and pride in her own abilities.
The benefits of the program extend beyond swimming. It has helped Sofia develop independence and new life skills, like getting dressed and undressed on her own—an achievement she proudly shares with her mom, even when her socks end up inside out. Through the Early Learning Centers’ weekly swim program, Sofia has learned to embrace the water and gained confidence and resilience that will serve her well -- and keep her safe around water -- for life.
