The word Sabbath means to cease.  So as Dr. Brooks is away on sabbatical, we will be using his original devotionals from 2009 on the book of Psalms.  He will resume The Bible Project devotionals upon his return.  Thank you for reading with us and praying for him as he replenishes his soul for the next seven years of ministry.
Psalm 21
The king rejoices in your strength, Lord.
    How great is his joy in the victories you give!
You have granted him his heart’s desire
    and have not withheld the request of his lips.
You came to greet him with rich blessings
    and placed a crown of pure gold on his head.
He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
    length of days, for ever and ever.
Through the victories you gave, his glory is great;
    you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.
Surely you have granted him unending blessings
    and made him glad with the joy of your presence.
For the king trusts in the Lord;
    through the unfailing love of the Most High
    he will not be shaken.
Your hand will lay hold on all your enemies;
    your right hand will seize your foes.
When you appear for battle,
    you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
    and his fire will consume them.
You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
    their posterity from mankind.
Though they plot evil against you
    and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed.
You will make them turn their backs
    when you aim at them with drawn bow.
Be exalted in your strength, Lord;
    we will sing and praise your might.

New International Version (NIV)
Who installed you in your work for God?  I was ordained by a group of Christians in Great Falls, Montana.  At Tallowood, Richard Foster visited me and prayed for me in my first office here.  Listening to beautiful prayers and beautiful music at an inauguration arranged for the the President ten years ago, I traveled backward three thousand years to hear a prayer lifted musically to the Lord in this beautiful psalm.  Can we hear the heart of King David, a man after God’s own heart?  Don’t you love David’s dependence?

David expresses both thanks and trust.  God has given him victories and the desires of his heart, blessing him richly.  God is the giver of life!  Are we grateful for the victories God has given us?  Let us thank him for abundant and eternal life.

The God whom we thank also deserves our trust.  God is able to deal with his enemies summarily.  Accordingly, we exalt the Lord in his strength; we sing and praise his might.  Today, join me in giving thanks to God for all that he has done.  List some ways that he has blessed you.  Today, join me in expressing trust to our trustworthy God.  God is our great King!  We pray for President Trump and all who are in leadership in our country.  May God guide them and give them wisdom.  Like David, may they put their trust in God.

This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
Duane
