Grand Valley State University
We have several important updates and opportunities to share as we wrap up the winter semester and look ahead to spring/summer.
In this issue, learn about Blackboard course availability and archives, explore how faculty enhance student engagement with the Knowledge Check tool, and get a sneak peek at a much-requested April Blackboard enhancement that lets you see whether students have viewed your feedback.
Plus, don't miss our latest "Did You Know?" tips, upcoming professional development opportunities, a "save the date" for our GV Technology Summit (10/2/25), and a request for proposals. Read on for all the details!

Spring/Summer Blackboard Courses

You may have noticed that your Spring/Summer Blackboard courses are now available. If you don't see them on Blackboard, please contact your departmental coordinator to assign you as the instructor of record in Banner. Student enrollments will begin three weeks before the course start date in Banner (April 14 for most course sites).
As you start thinking about your Spring/Summer courses, you may want to take advantage of the following common requests:
  • Merge Course Request. Use this request to combine two or more sites into one parent site.
  • Follow these instructions for copying content from an Ultra course to another Ultra course.
  • Course Restore Request. In Blackboard, faculty have access to their course sites for two years plus one semester. After that, courses are moved to an archive where they stay for a total of three years. Use this Service Portal ticket to request that a course from the archives be temporarily restored.
  • Use this request to schedule a consultation with your eLearning Technologies liaison for assistance with Blackboard.

Blackboard Course Archiving

Per our Blackboard policies about the duration of course availability for faculty, it's time to remove courses older than 2 years + 1 semester—which means we will be removing Fall 2022 (202310) and Winter 2023 (202320) course sites from Blackboard on May 1. Please copy any content you want to keep in Blackboard to a template site before May 1. You can request the creation of a new template site by completing this site creation ticket.

Faculty Spotlight - Blackboard Knowledge Checks

Jenny Bajewa and Kelly Aubry, Allied Health Science
Blackboard's Knowledge Check tool is a powerful way to reinforce learning, provide immediate feedback, and help students assess their understanding of course material. Unlike traditional quizzes, Knowledge Checks are designed for formative assessment, allowing students to practice concepts in a low-stakes environment without grade penalties. This encourages active learning and helps instructors identify areas where students need additional support.
This video highlights two Allied Health Science instructors (Jenny Bajewa and Kelly Aubry) who successfully integrated Knowledge Checks into their courses.
To learn how to add Knowledge Checks to your course, see this Knowledge Base article in our Service Portal or submit a consultation request and work with your liaison for support!

April Blackboard Enhancements

New Blackboard Feature: See Whether Students Have Viewed Your Feedback!
Great news! Starting with the April 4 Blackboard update, instructors can see whether students have viewed their feedback. This long-requested feature can help you better understand student engagement with your feedback and help you follow up as needed to support their learning. When a grade is posted, the indicator includes a "Not Reviewed" label with the existing Completed label in the Status column. When the student reviews the feedback, the status updates to "Reviewed" with a review timestamp.
If the new grade indicator is reset for the assessment, such as when a grade is updated or has multiple attempts, the timestamp updates when the student reviews the feedback again. The "Not Reviewed" or "Reviewed" label is removed if all attempts are deleted.
