Psalm 124:1-5
If the Lord had not been on our side—
    let Israel say—
if the Lord had not been on our side
    when people attacked us,
they would have swallowed us alive
    when their anger flared against us;
the flood would have engulfed us,
    the torrent would have swept over us,
the raging waters
    would have swept us away.

New International Version (NIV)
                 God must care a lot about sports!  I only say this because so very often we see athletes point up to the sky when they make a good play.  So when a team wins a championship, is it because God likes those players or that city more?  We know for sure that God cares deeply about people.

                How about you?  Is God on your side?  How do you know?  In a Psalm of the Ascents, David remembered how God had defended and blessed Israel through the ages.  Without question, God’s direct intervention on behalf of Israel indicated his favor and kindness to them.  David was right to express thanks.

                In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul wrote to the church in Rome asking, “If God is for us who can be against us?”  What evidence does he adduce?  “He who did not spare his own Son . . .”  God’s favor is not revealed so much in sports victories as it is in the truth of the Gospel.  God was for us when he sent his Son to die.  God was for us when his Son rose from the dead on the third day.  If the Lord had not been on our side, our own sins would have swallowed us alive.

                In view of God’s grace revealed in Jesus, may I ask, “Who is on the Lord’s side?”  God is for us.  Are we for God?  How will we show him today?
Pray with me:
Father, how we thank you for the greatness of your grace revealed to us in Jesus.  You are with us.  Today we choose to live life with you.  You are for us.  We pray that we will live our lives always, only for our King.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
