1 Kings 21:13-15
Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying, “Naboth has cursed both God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death. Then they sent word to Jezebel: “Naboth has been stoned to death.”
As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, “Get up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to sell you. He is no longer alive, but dead.”

New International Version (NIV)
“You can do whatever you are big enough to do.”  Have you heard that philosophy of life?  Who will know if we do the wrong thing?  As long as we don’t get caught.  Even if someone finds out, what can they do to stop us from doing wrong?

When Naboth wouldn’t sell Ahab his vineyard, the king of Israel pouted.  But his wife said, “Don’t worry.  You can do whatever you are big enough to do.  You are the king.  You can do whatever you want.  I’ll have Naboth killed.”  So she did.  Who would ever find out.  Then Elijah came along and confronted King Ahab, telling him he too would be killed.   R. G. Lee preached a sermon on this passage with the sobering title, “Payday, Someday.”  Elijah’s words came true and Naboth experienced the consequences of his and Jezebel’s choices.

All of us face a payday someday.  As Paul told the Corinthians, “We must all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.”  In other words, “There is a God and you are not He.”  Years ago Russell Dilday told us about a bumper sticker which said, “If you are living like there is no God, you had better be right.”   All of our choices have consequences in the present and in eternity.  Only God is big enough to do whatever he wants to do.  And he loved us so much he gave up his only Son for us.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for your kindness and your grace.  Help us today to recognize your presence.  Let us not take advantage of one another.  Help us to see ourselves through your eyes, humble and dependent on you.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year our Every Day with Jesus readings will follow The Bible Project Read Scripture Plan.  Copies of this reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download
the app at readscripture.org.  Read through the Bible with us in 2019!
Joyfully,
