2018 August Email Newsletter

From the Camp Director

As I am writing this, we are in our last week of camp. I will be including a camp update in our September email newsletter. We have a had a great summer, I want to just take a moment and thank everyone that has been involved in our summer camp program. We have had an exceptional group of Event Coordinators that have planned some wonderful camps and brought a great group of faculty. All of our Event Coordinators and faculty volunteer their time to serve the Lord in helping shape young lives for Christ. I want to thank everyone that has helped in this way. I also want to thank our kitchen crew and volunteers, it was a little different this year with some staff transitions. We did miss Janelle Lloyd as our food service manger, but welcomed Kristin Boruff as our new food service manager. We had a great team of maintenance guys who kept the grass and weeds down and maintained our buildings. So much goes into these 10 weeks of camp. I do want to BRAG on our summer staff. We had a wonderful group that made a committment for 12 weeks to be dorm R.A.'s, facilitate recreation and life guard, they clean and flip our buildings from camp session to camp session. What a GREAT group we had this summer!  The summer staff works between 10 and 15 hours a day. They do this without much apprecation and with little sleep. They have sacrificed family, vacations, time hanging out with friends and finances. They do not get much pay, and yet they have maintaned their faithfulness to the kingdom through serving. With this group of young people we have a GREAT future ahead of us. Whatever they do in life, they will look at serving with a different set of lenses. So, let me just GIVE everyone a BIG THANK YOU! I can't wait to share our numbers in next month's newsletter!

 Horse Camp News

How time flies!  Pat and I will be starting our eleventh year as Event Coordinators for the H.R.C.A. Horse Camp.  The Lord has truly blessed this ministry with fantastic volunteers who often use vacation time from their vocations so that they can serve.  Others put everything in their daily lives on hold to assist with Horse Camp. No amount of praise would suffice in my appreciation for each of them.  These volunteers serve by teaching, counseling, song leading, assist as dorm advisors, and help with all aspects on the horse side. If you would like to volunteer in any of the above areas please let me know, we are always seeking those whom we might be able to plug in to serve in the horse camp ministry.
We have also been able to expand the number of horse camps.  We now offer horse camps for 3rd and 4th grade up through High School, and are always truly blessed by giving rides for the Joy Camp campers.  Along with the camps, we also provide demonstrations and rides for groups.

As you can imagine, there are several costs involved in horse camp. Feeding, farrier and veterinary care for the horses, and maintaining tack, helmets, the barn and arena are some of the necessary expenses. There are also plans to continue improvements to the Horse Camp facilities. So...

We decided to have a FUN fundraiser for Horse Camp. Please come if you can and share this event.

VBS

We are so thankful for the many churches that made Hanging Rock your mission for VBS. We have started raising money for our swimming pool. All the money that is collected from VBS unless otherwise designated went toward our swimming pool. We are needing to replace all of our concrete and fencing by next summer. We still need to raise around $25,000. If you would like to help make this possible before next summer you can donate online or send a check to Hanging Rock and put pool in the memo.

Facilties/Wilderness Director

Great News! The Board of Director's has decided to bring Todd on as a full-time staff member at Hanging Rock. With moving Kristin to Food Service it left a gap for our facilties. Todd was at a 30 hour a week on the off season, then full-time in the summer to take care of the Wilderness side of the property. Todd's responsibilities now include the day to day of making sure our facilties are ready for our guests when they arrive. In the summer Todd transitions into overseeing our wilderness camps, paintball camps and horse camps and being the front-line person for them. Todd has served Hanging Rock since March 2016. We are very excited about this transition and we know Todd will help keep our facilties looking great!
