All aboard for fall

This fall, you can travel abroad in mind and spirit via Jim Rubenstein’s ILR class, Paris: 2,000 Years of Planned Beauty, or tour London and the U.K. with guides Richard and Marcy Piland in the ILR course A Tourist’s Guide to London and the United Kingdom. Until then, while our summer travel is limited and even staycations are iffy, these safecations and travel to local and virtual destinations are sure to pique your adventurous spirit. Safe travels!
There's so much to listen and watch, free online! Want more ways to stay connected to ILR? Like us on Facebook!
Liberty train depot

Riding the rails

The historic 1880s train depot located just across the state border in Union County, Indiana, is open for tours most Sundays, 2-4 p.m., June-August. It houses the artifacts of the Union County Historical Society. It’s just a 30-minute drive from Oxford, but please call ahead (765-580-0388 or 765-458-6661) to make sure the volunteer guides will be there. You can also hop online for a 15-minute video about the Whitewater Valley Railroad in Connersville, Indiana featured on an episode of the show History in Your Own Backyard.
In Butler County, Ohio, step back in time to the Chester Train Station in Sharon Woods Park. It's part of the rural, small-town 1800s Heritage Village, featuring self-guided walking and driving tours, a museum, and more.
Butler County RR Map
To find Ohio Railroad Stations Past and Present you can search the database by county and access a chart that includes station name, the original railroad operational there, current location, type of use, date track was built, building material (brick or wood) and notes of interest for each station.

Blast off to Mars

In case you weren't sure how much to budget for space tourism, Finances Online suggested $75-$250,000 back in 2015, but predicted that in 2023 you could volunteer for a trip to Mars! Sounds like a great ILR Special Event, doesn't it? For those who prefer to stay on the ground and tour for free, there are several interesting offerings. NASA at Home provides virtual tours of everything from telescopes to planets. Their Space to Ground web series gives you a front seat at the International Space Station, with a new episode every Friday. You can binge-watch more than 300 episodes already posted online.

You are also welcome to follow Perseverance to Mars, via STARnet. A live webcast on Tuesday, June 30, 4 p.m. EDT, will be facilitated by Carter Emmart, Director of Astrovisualization at the American Museum of Natural History.
