Disability Artivism Across the Flyover Provinces

From the first moment of the opening address, when University of Regina Elder-in-Residence Lorna Standingready named her skin colour as a disability in a province where racism rules, I found myself in a new place of deeper perception and connections. A place where closed captioning, ASL interpretation, and Crip Time were normative. To learn more about this symposium, participants, and the experience that happened on November 28, 2019......

Holiday Feast

On December 14th, 2019, Astonished! hosted our annual Holiday Feast. A! Core Members, families, friends, volunteers, and staff all joined in the festivities. With the Core Members, we began the event with a craft activity by decorating ornaments with paint and bling. When that was occurring, staff and volunteers were hard at work preparing the food. There was delicious food, including turkey, mash potatoes, cabbage rolls, meatballs, and to end the night, ice cream for dessert. We had fun coming together and catching up with one another over good food. Thank-you City of Regina for the Social Development Grant, which partially funds our monthly Astonished! Social Club event!

Oaklynn Elizabeth Vickaryous

We are delighted to introduce the newest member of the Astonished! family, Oaklynn Elizabeth, daughter of Bonnie Cummings-Vickaryous and James Vickaryous, and sister to Lauren and Anna. Welcome Oaklynn, we look forward to you taking your unique place within your family and your bigger family. Bonnie will be on maternity leave during 2020.

In true Bonnie fashion, just weeks before giving birth to Oaklynn, she successfully defended her master’s thesis, Co-Composing Narratives of Strengths: A Narrative Inquiry into Lived Experiences Authentically Grounded in the Strengths Perspective. Specifically, the goal of this narrative inquiry was to learn from young adults living with complex physical disabilities and their families about initiating and maintaining a strengths-based organization. We will share more about Bonnie’s research in a future newslette; for now, we offer our praise and love

Elisa Wong

You can learn more about and support our Grow Gratitude campaign here.

I am inspired by the vision of Astonished and how it is lived out. My gratitude growsout of how people I love are embraced and upheld by their participation in this life-giving and life-changing community, and how that has changed the world around them. Jan Van Aertselaer

So glad to have this Centre available for these amazing, hard working individuals. Bev Birns

December PATH Showcase

Every life is unique, and every PATH is unique. Each semester the A! Student Researchers determines the specific goals they want to work on. The PATH Showcase highlights this work. For example, Kelsey Culbert has been working on creating episodes for her podcast. You can listen to some of her recent episodes on Sound Cloud.  Rebekah Lindenbach focused on transitions in her life over the past four months, including moving into her new condo in Regina’s first co-housing communityKennen Dorgan shared her two passions; developing the skills she needs to text, and photography. Avery Ottenbreit presented a video that was a collaboration of her music created on Bloom and used in Yoga for Every Body. Kaitlyn Hoar, the quintessential event planner, shared about the success of her end of semester dinner for A!TLC. Sean Davis educated us about the perks and perils of public transport, including how snow in a crosswalk and a power chair are not a great combo. He is grateful for the kindness of the people who helped push.
