Summer 2019

School Year Success

With the summer's end in sight and the new school year approaching, the stresses of education are starting to linger in the minds of parents.  How can parents help their child succeed?  What could parents do differently this year?  Surprisingly, the answer doesn't come from better teachers or better curriculums.  According to both Christopher Duncan, M.ED, who taught the last Parent Workshop at CCCDP, and Waterford.org, the most accurate prediction for student success is parent involvement.  When parents are actively involved in their child's education, they are giving their child the support they need to succeed in addition to developing a lifestyle of learning.  Parents who are actively involved in their child's education are more likely to have children who earn higher grades, graduate high school, have a higher self confidence and better social skills.  Teachers who have focused on parent involvement have seen improvements in grades, motivation and even the classroom's behavior.  Here are some ways to be engaged with your child's education this school year:
  1. Volunteer in the classroom
  2. Volunteer for school activities and events
  3. Meet with teachers outside of required parent teacher conferences
  4. Keep the communication with teachers open throughout the year
  5. Communicate anything that is going on with your child that would impact his or her education
  6. Continue involvement through high school

How will you be more involved in your child's school this year?

Back to School Countdown Bus Craft

You will need:
  • Construction paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick
  • Stapler
  • Ribbon
  • Template (CLICK HERE)
Begin by printing the school bus template out.  Depending on your child's age, either you or your child should cut the template out.  Have either you or child trace the school bus parts on yellow, black and red construction paper to create the bus.
Glue the bus together with a glue stick.  Next, have your child cut 1 inch strips to form the links.  Attach the links to the bottom of the bus as shown with a stapler and attach one link for every day left until the school year.
Cut a piece of ribbon and attach it to the top of the bus so that it can be hung.  Hang somewhere where everyone can see it and rip off a link for each day!
