As the Hallmark holiday (Valentine's Day) will culminate this impending week, it's the perfect time to agree to lead with love. This week, let's choose connection over conflict, vulnerability over walls, and kindness as a daily action rather than just a feeling.
In the words of the late Morrie Schwartz,
"The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in".

In all of the headlines lately, you may have seen news about the turmoil surrounding the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, including its controversial renaming and now a temporary closure for extensive renovations. While this should concern all lovers of the performing arts, it is also very personal because my sister-in-law, Elizabeth, has served for 25+ years as a violist for the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra/Washington National Opera Orchestra there, and because I have such vivid memories of sitting in those halls for Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Matilda, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the joyful Messiah sing-along. Those evenings were more than entertainment; they were shared experiences where thousands of people, from all walks of life, laughed, cried, and left the building somehow carrying a bit more light into the world.

The Kennedy Center has long stood as a kind of icon for the performing arts in our country. A place created with the unusual, bipartisan agreement that the arts are part of America’s civic life, not just an optional extra. It opened in 1971 as the nation’s living memorial to President John F. Kennedy, who believed that music, theatre, and dance help people see themselves more clearly and imagine a better future. For decades, its stages have hosted everything from grand opera and cutting-edge theater to nationally televised Honors and beloved holiday traditions, including programs designed specifically with children and students in mind. In that way, it has quietly helped define what American culture can look and feel like for young people and adults alike.

The snow of last weekend was such a special experience. Wilmington rarely sees frozen precipitation, let alone half-a-foot of perfect powder! There was something so whimsical about going to sleep Saturday night with light hope, and waking up Sunday morning to a winter's dream. Hopefully you enjoyed the snowy moment just as much as these Friends did!

. . . . and now that we've had a good snow, let's all go ahead and start wishing for Spring.
It's time for the sun to return 🌞

Green Team launches Longleaf Stewardship Project! |
|
|
|
After a week of snow and cold rain, we finished Friday with a bright sunny day -- the perfect weather to begin our stewardship project at Longleaf Center, a Green Team initiative to revive the native plant community in front of the cottage. Cape Fear Landscaping removed azaleas and camellias in these areas to create space for native trees, shrubs, and perennials. A few azaleas were rescued and saved for those interested in transplanting. Kendra Pendergrast managed to squeeze one into the backseat of her car!
As you drive by Longleaf Center or walk along the trails, you will notice the changes in the landscape. It looks like a blank slate now, but this spring we will nurture the present native flora and add vibrant plants to the mix. Teachers, parents, and students will help us design the new landscape as we emphasize native plants with a high value to wildlife.
Funding and material support for this project is made possible through grants and Longleaf Center donations, including a generous gift from an anonymous donor to cover the cost of shrub removal. Thank you for your support of this important project at Longleaf Center.
At a time when development continues at a breakneck pace around Wilmington, our school has a unique opportunity to conserve a native plant community and share our stewardship mission more broadly.
