About creating CERF+, Josh remembers: "At first, we tried passing the hat at craft shows, but that was tough. Sometimes people would see me coming and they'd run. Or they’d say, “Hey, didn’t I give you $10 last year?” Nobody had much money. But then we thought of raffling off a free exhibit space at a craft show, which we would cajole show organizers to donate ahead of time, and that worked! People were fine with gambling on something to help others if it might also benefit themselves. So we kept going, and CERF+ granted its first loan around 1987. Now CERF+ is at the forefront of helping craftspeople in crisis."
