Cowichan | Therapeutic Riding and Equine-Based Therapeutic Services
Each year, hundreds of supporters come together in support of CTRA's programs. Without the generous contributions of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and businesses from near and far - CTRA's work would not be possible.
Following our AGM, this issue of the Leading Rein recognizes the generosity of donors, sponsors, and other helping hands in 2016.

Annika Christensen’s Story

PTSD (or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a diagnosis commonly associated with veterans, but it is a condition that can affect any individual. Annika Christensen is a teenager with PTSD who, like many veterans involved with equine-based therapy programs, is seeing tremendous benefit from her time with horses at the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association (CTRA).
Annika is a bright girl with a bubbly personality and an enthusiasm for activities (crafts, camping, cooking) with friends and family. A responsible young woman, Annika is a diligent babysitter, devoted sister, and often volunteers her time in her community.
Over the last several years Annika has faced with some extremely difficult challenges.
The first of a series of cumulative traumatic episodes occurred in 2014 when Annika witnessed an accident whereby her mother (carrying her young cousin) fell and severely broke a leg. This incident resulted in an extensive recovery process involving months of rehabilitation that, despite the tremendous support of friends, turned the family’s life upside-down.
Following this ordeal, the family moved from Powell River to Duncan BC. This move was another challenge for Annika who had to leave behind her friends, community, and life as she knew it.
In 2015, Annika witnessed her father lose consciousness and fall down a flight of stairs, sustaining a severe brain injury. Annika was the only other family member in the house and played an instrumental role in administering first aid, calling 911, and assisting the ambulance attendants. In this fall, her father suffered a major concussion that would keep him off work for almost seven months.
Although she responded commendably at the time of her father’s accident, this final incident affected Annika significantly. Over the next few weeks her family noticed significant behavioural changes, and began to realize the extent of the harm caused by these successive traumatic episodes.
Annika became plagued by nightmares of the accident and lost her ability to sleep. She was always on edge and loud noises (and other such triggers) often brought her to tears. Because of what she had witnessed, Annika was deeply, uncontrollably, and constantly afraid that something bad would happen to her loved ones.
After several weeks of tumult, the family began to explore options to help Annika deal with her Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) diagnosis. The Christensen family visited the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association (CTRA) on Providence Farm and discussed therapeutic riding with their family doctor who agreed to recommend Annika to the program.
Since joining the program, Annika’s family says they “haven’t looked back.” The Christensens credit Annika’s positive interactions with CTRA horses, staff, and volunteers with helping Annika to develop the coping skills necessary to deal with what she had experienced.
After some time with the program, Annika is frequently sleeping through the night and is experiencing far fewer nightmares. Her family says that “the program has been instrumental in her recovery and long term well-being.” Annika’s doctor also credits much of her recovery to therapeutic riding and time spent at CTRA.
Always strongly connected, the Christensens credit the challenges of this difficult time with bringing them even closer together. The family looks forward to the future of Annika’s involvement with CTRA, and are playing an important role in helping to raise awareness about the benefits of therapeutic riding and equine-based therapeutic services for persons (particularly teenagers) living with PTSD.

Piggery Update!

If you have visited CTRA over the past year, you may have noticed some new construction. After many decades of service as an outbuilding, the historic "Piggery" building (adjacent to the riding arena) is being renovated into a much-needed multi-use space that will house our new family viewing lounge and expanded Jane James Used Tack Shop!

This project has been a dream of CTRA's for many years. We are looking forward to providing our clients with a comfortable indoor space to watch the lessons, partake of our resource library, relax, and socialize. We are also excited about moving our award-winning social enterprise - the Jane James Used Tack Shop - to a much larger and more accessible physical location. The new building will also free up spaces currently used for our viewing lounge and tack store - enabling CTRA to make better use of the facility as a whole.
This project has been a long time in the making and is coming together in increments thanks to the support of our community. Thanks to the financial and in-kind support of the contributors listed below, and the time/effort of countless volunteers, we are on track to have this new space open for use by Summer 2017. Please stay tuned for updates about our tack store's grand opening week!

Brentwood Students win $5000 for CTRA

Brentwood College students Ferrari Hann, Megan Kuo, Hayley Jones, and Sarah Richards from the grade nine 21st Century Studies class were winners of this year's Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI), a secondary school program that connects "youth to social issues, local charities, and philanthropy at a pivotal stage in their adolescence."
Students involved with the YPI program select a charity in their community and prepare a presentation on how $5000 could benefit their chosen organization. Winning presenters are awarded $5000 towards their cause on behalf of the Toskan Casale Foundation and Wood Foundation.
CTRA was thrilled to be selected by these talented young philanthropists and are very grateful to the YPI program for this support! Learn more about this award here

Para-Dressage Bronze Grade V Test 1 Champion Kiara Caplin on therapy horse "Leo"

CTRA riders win the 2016 Para-Equestrian Video Competition Series

Para-Equestrian Canada's Video Competition Series provides riders with a disability the opportunity to compete nationally - without leaving their home stable! Riders film a "test" (a series of movements demonstrating skill) at home and submit it to be judged against entries in the same "class" (a level of competition). Video competition allows entrants to compete against riders from across the country without the prohibitive expense and logistics of travel. For riders that depend on home-based supports (e.g. a particular horse, an experienced volunteer team, lift assist for mounting) or that live in remote areas, the video series makes competition highly accessible.
CTRA is thrilled to announce the following results for CTRA riders involved in the 2016 Video Competition Series:
Para-Dressage Bronze Grade III Test 1 Champion: Kiara Caplin – Chemainus, BC
Para-Dressage Bronze Grade II Test 1 Champion: Chelsy Tuplin – Duncan, BC
Para-Dressage Bronze Grade Ia Test 2 Champion: Makenzie Smith – Crofton, BC
Because CTRA Riders did so well in the 2016 series, CTRA was also named:
High Point Therapeutic Riding Centre!
Congratulations to all the riders, volunteers, coaches, and officials that worked so hard to make the 2016 Video Competition a success! We look forward to another great season in 2017!

Thank you to the Vancouver Island Providence Community Association for decades of partnership, and the Sisters of St. Ann for the legacy of our community!

Consider a monthly donation for maximum impact!

Monthly donations are one of the best ways to support CTRA. Even a small amount ($5/month) makes a big difference.
Monthly contributions allow CTRA to plan for the future and achieve greater sustainability. They are also a great option for busy donors - just set it and forget it!
Monthly donations to CTRA can be set up and managed directly online through our Canada Helps account OR through our office. Canada Helps donations for any amount will receive a tax receipt, whereas direct donations (through CTRA's office) must be an annual aggregate value of $25 or more to qualify for a tax receipt. If you would like more information on setting up a monthly contribution, please contact us
