Acts 3:6-10
6 Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

New International Version (NIV)
What do we expect God to do for us?  What would we settle for?  Is there a financial number in our minds that would make us think, “If I had that I would be happy”?  How about a relationship, or a job?  I wonder if we might settle for less than God has for us.

The lame man just wanted a gift from the two Apostles.  He was expecting to get something from them, but he had no idea what God could do.  Peter told him he didn’t have any money.  But he didn’t stop there.  Instead, Peter offered him healing in the name of Jesus, taking him by his hand and raising him to his feet.  What if it didn’t work?  Was this a ruse?  No Peter knew God would heal him.  The man who used to be lame began to walk, jump, and praise God.  Why?  He received more than he expected.

Soon, the bystanders recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful.  The church was still doing what Jesus did.  Through Jesus’ ministry, a blind man was recognized as the one who used to be blind (John 9).  Others used to be lame (John 5).  Who were we when we encountered Jesus?  How has he changed our lives?  Shouldn’t we thank him today?

Jesus offers more than just the reversal of our misfortunes and afflictions.  He gives us a life of relationship with him.  Will we receive it?  Settle for nothing less.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for offering us abundant, eternal life in Jesus.  Forgive us for seeing the world through material eyes.  Show us the true beauty of the beautiful life you have for us.  Help your church to continue to do and teach what Jesus did and taught.  In Jesus’ name, we pray.  Amen.
We begin the new year of 2024 with great anticipation.  Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
