John 13:13-14
You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.  Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
New International Version (NIV)
Clearly she was having a bad day.  At a recent outing in one of Melanie’s favorite restaurants, we watched our waitress take a tongue-lashing from another customer, just as we arrived.  When we spoke, she managed a smile and took our order.  We could tell she was overwhelmed as she tried to attend to her area.  I found myself wondering how we could help her.
Serving is never easy.  People can be so demanding.  Jesus showed his disciples how to serve.  Surprising these men who had been jockeying for position, Jesus took the lowest place and washed their feet.  On another occasion he made it clear that he had not come to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for others.  What could be lower than washing feet?  Dying on a cross.
Recently over 500 in our church participated in a Serve the City project.  Our students painted a house, while others prepared a clothes closet.  I could tell by the smiles on the faces of our members that serving for a day not only did good for those who were served but also those who served.  When is the next day to Serve the City.  Today will work.  Find a way to serve the servants today.  If you can do it anonymously all the better.  Be kind to everyone because everyone is having a hard time in some way.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for our Savior who served us and gave his life as a ransom for us.  We love being served.  Would you continue to form our hearts until we love to serve as much as we love to be served.  Show us someone who is struggling today.  Let us do our best for them as you did your very best for us on the cross.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
