“From little acorns grow”
BySamantha Zinth, Governing Board President

There’s a 14th Century English proverb that’s used to describe how great things often come from humble beginnings: “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow.”
At the Fellowship, our Acorn Society is comprised of members and friends who have made a cash contribution or planned commitment to our Endowment Fund. The Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Endowment Fund will eventually provide a reliable source of income in perpetuity to strengthen our mission, support special projects, and drive social justice. It is how we “seed” the future of the Fellowship for generations to come.
Thanks to a generous challenge grant from the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset, New York, our Fellowship could receive unrestricted matching funds of up to $10,000 per donor as part of the Wake Now Our Vision national campaign. Wake Now Our Vision aims to increase planned giving throughout the Unitarian Universalist movement, and will match up to 10% of certain planned gift commitments disclosed since January 1, 2017.
Gifts such as a bequest in your will, naming the Fellowship as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or insurance policy, charitable trusts and annuities will all qualify for unrestricted matching funds – as much as $10,000 per occurrence. Even gifts of undisclosed value may qualify for a flat $1,000 match.
If you’ve been considering a planned gift to the Fellowship, now is the time to do so! Although the match was originally slated to run through June 30, 2020, Wake Now Our Vision estimates that all matching funds will be spoken for by the end of 2018.
If you think your planned gift may qualify for the match, please contact Phyllis Schmitt, Business Administrator, or a member of the Planned Giving Committee. Members of the Planned Giving Committee will be in the Fellowship Hall after both services this Sunday, October 7 to answer your questions. Please act fast and help us leverage this extraordinary opportunity for the future of the Fellowship!

Honoring Our Ancestors by Rev. Christina Leone-Tracy
American Sign Language interpretation provided by Jacqueline Corey (10:45)
Honoring ancestors is an important part of many cultures, and one that dominant western culture has lost touch with, especially with emphasis on individualism and autonomy. But we did not create ourselves and we can give thanks for the people who came before us, whether or not we know their names. We will also be considering the Iroquois philosophy of the 7th generation, remembering that we are not the end of the line. If you have pictures or mementos of any ancestors (familial or otherwise) you would like to honor at our altar table, please bring them this Sunday. You will bring them home after the service.

Intertwined Together by John Newhall, Fellowship Member

This group is for cancer survivors and those who are recently diagnosed. Our purpose is to provide a safe place to talk about our experiences, emotions, and thoughts without judgement from others. It is a place where each person is valued for one’s individual journey. Our focus is moving forward in a positive way through sharing of spiritual and mind/body information/practices that have helped us. Another focus is spiritual growth through finding one’s passions, living in the present, and viewing the whole person. It is a place to support those going through a difficult time.

People of Color Small Group
We recognize that as a majority-white congregation, it can often feel isolating for People of Color who love our theology but might not identify with some other aspects of the community. Join the UU People of Color (UU PoC) small group once a month or more as we gather to have fun and discuss topics that we can identify with. This is a great way to meet and connect with people and avoid isolation. October is Filipino American history month!
We usually meet every second Sunday of the month at the Fellowship, other times we meet at various locations in the Fox Valley to have dinner and support PoC/LGBTQ/disabled-bodied owned (and PoC/LGBTQ/disabled-friendly) businesses. PoC of all ages, especially teens, are more than welcome to join us! Email UUPOC@gmail.com for more details.
