Food City Breaks Ground on County Line Road
Food City is on the way to District 5. We’ve known it was coming but I was honored to participate in the recent groundbreaking ceremony for the new full-service grocery store at County Line Road and Old Highway 20. Food City has been a tremendous community partner in Huntsville and the location in District 5 will finally address the previously expanding food desert in this particular part of the city. Construction will take about a year with doors expected to be open in the spring of 2027.

Martin Road Bridge Project Nearing Completion
I am happy to share that Phase II of the Martin Road widening project is nearing completion and that two lanes of the bridge over Betts Spring Branch are now open, allowing traffic to flow all the way to Wall Triana Highway. While the project is still not complete, drivers will no longer need to detour onto Trademark Drive in order to head south on Wall Triana or access airport property. I want to thank drivers for their patience while the project was ongoing and all the workers for providing District 5 with a much better and safer roadway.

Road Resurfacing in District 5
The City Council recently approved funding for Phase 2 of the City’s road improvement plan for the 2026 fiscal year. The improvements include resurfacing and concrete work for neighborhood roads. Several streets in D5 are part of the projects. Some of those include:
  • Finney Drive from Electronics Boulevard to end of street
  • Forest Glen Drive from Sugar Bluff Lane to Grey Fawn Trail
  • Windscape Drive from Jeff Road to end of street

The Heroes of HEMSI
It’s always enlightening to me to see experts at work and that’s what I saw during a recent visit to the HEMSI headquarters on Oakwood Avenue. I got to learn more about the people and the equipment that play an invaluable role in delivering on-the-spot, life-saving care during emergency situations. I got an up-close look at their emergency vehicles, learned how they are stocked and equipped and received a brief demonstration of the tools used to administer blood to individuals in critical condition. I am grateful not only for the time they shared with me but also for the courageous work they do on a 24/7 basis.

Make Plans to Participate in MidCity 5K
Get ready for the first MidCity 5K road race at 8 a.m. on June 13 at the MidCity District. Registration is open for the fun and community-focused race that benefits the Maitland Conservatory, a tremendous asset for teaching and sharing music in Huntsville. The event is for both runners and walkers with live bands and performers throughout the district during the race. I never fail to be impressed by the creative and exciting things that are happening at MidCity.
