CSI-STEM Camp Recap: Young Detectives in Action!

From July 29–31, nine curious and enthusiastic youth joined us for a thrilling three-day CSI-STEM Camp, where science met sleuthing in the most hands-on way! Campers sharpened their detective skills through crime-solving challenges, fingerprint analysis, cryptology, and forensic science—all while building teamwork and having fun.

Day 1: Cracking the Case
We kicked off camp with a lively welcome game before diving into detective training. Campers tackled their first mystery, learning how to collect evidence, interpret clues, and document findings like real investigators. They explored the world of cryptology by decoding encrypted messages and secret codes, then tested their observational memory by recalling details from a staged scene. In the afternoon, science met snacks as youth investigated mystery powders—while baking chocolate chip cookies! The day wrapped up with a detective-themed story and group reflection.

Day 2: Fingerprints & Forensics
Day two focused on fingerprint science. Campers uncovered prints from surfaces like glass and mirrors, experimenting with ink, pencil lead, and flour to lift and transfer them. Their skills were put to the test in the “Canine Caper Crime Scene,” where they collected and analyzed fingerprints, hair, fibers, and paper evidence to solve the case. After lunch, youth conducted paper analysis and wrapped up their investigation with a successful resolution. To celebrate, they made puppy chow, read a story, and reflected on their discoveries.

Day 3: Blood, DNA & Botany
The final day explored the fascinating world of blood and DNA. Campers learned about blood components by creating a slime model, extracted DNA, and built candy DNA structures to visualize genetic coding. After lunch, they investigated forensic botany—discovering how plants can help solve crimes—and tested their senses with the “Sniffing Out the Solution” activity. The camp concluded with edible blood models made from yogurt and fruit, a final story, and heartfelt reflections on their CSI journey.
