NSF / Across Most Directorates Program: NSF National Quantum Virtual Laboratory (NQVL) Solicitation #: NSF 23-604 Synopsis: Supports, with the introduction of NQVL, the translation from basic knowledge to new, scalable technologies that can provide solutions to real-world problems in a multi-step process that requires prototyping, validation, at-scale testing, and eventual full-scale demonstration. The overarching goal of the NQVL is the demonstration of practical quantum advantage, the actual application of the tools of Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE) to problems that will enable solutions that classical approaches can only solve much less efficiently or not at all. While there are three phases envisioned by NQVL, The present solicitation applies only to the Pilot phase of the Quantum Science and Technology Demonstration (QSTD) component, which is focused on the development of the conceptual design of the QSTD project. However, the solicitation contains a full scope across all three phases of this component to help prospective proposers decide on the scale and scope of their proposals within the context of anticipated future goals for the entire program. Conference on College Composition & Communication (CCCC) Program: CCCC Emergent Researchers Award 2023-2024 Call for Proposals Synopsis: Supports the organization's and its members' efforts to become a clear, trusted public voice on writing and instruction issues. Specifically supports early-career researchers, especially those who have not had the opportunity to engage in funded research and / or those who do not have support for research in their institutions. The Templeton Foundation Program: Grants Synopsis: Supports projects in the following priority areas: Life Sciences, Culture and Global Perspectives, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Human Sciences, Philosophy and Theology, Public Engagement, and Individual Freedom and Free Markets. The Templeton Foundation invests in bold ideas from contrarian thinkers — ideas that cross disciplinary boundaries and challenge conventional assumptions. And they fund innovative programs that engage the public with these ideas, in an effort to open minds, deepen understanding, and inspire curiosity. Award details: 2023 grants have ranged from ~$85K to ~$1.9M. 15% overhead allowed. Project durations are typically 3 years. WITH (in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation) Program: Request for Proposals - Supporting Healthcare Equity in Communities of Color for Older Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Synopsis: Supports projects fostering health and healthcare systems transformation for Older Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Communities of Color, centering the goals, perspectives, and needs of this population. This contributes to a health and healthcare system that is fair and just, treats all people with dignity and respect, and rectifies past harms and prevents future ones. Proposals should prioritize one of the following approaches: - Support implementation of models, i.e., seeding systems solutions of projects that support community-based Primary Care Providers (PCPs) in providing care that meets the needs and goals of Older Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Communities of Color; - Developing resources for Older Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and / or creating / leveraging networks supporting resource dissemination and utilization to PCPs, healthcare entities, and larger healthcare and disability justice6 ecosystems regarding the experiences of Older Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Communities of Color; - Support regional or national advocacy with entities such as grassroots organizing groups, social movement groups, movement-building organizations, community-based organizations, community organizing groups, and base-building groups related to the care that Older Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Communities of Color receive from PCPs; and - Identify and fill gaps in knowledge and inform efforts to improve health related to the care that Older Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Communities of Color receive. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Program: Policies for Action Effects of State Preemption Policies on Racial Justice and Health (P4A) Synopsis: Supports research that identifies the systemic root causes of U.S. health inequities, which have strong links to structural racism and other forms of oppression. For this P4A call for proposals, the goal is to build the evidence base investigating how preemption policies at the state level may affect racial justice and health equity. Research should focus on how state-level preemption impacts local authority; apply a racial equity lens to the policy research processes and outcomes; and include community groups and / or members, especially those from historically marginalized communities, as leaders or partners in all stages of the research. Research findings are intended to inform and guide legislators; public agencies; public policy advocates; racial and other justice organizations; community organizers; and others who are developing and implementing policies to create thriving, healthy, equitable communities. Award details: The size of the budget will be weighed in relation to the importance and likely contribution of the proposed research. Past awards have ranged from $30K to $450K. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Program: Health Data for Action — HD4A (Data Access Award) Synopsis: Supports innovative research that uses the available data to answer important research questions and inform health policy. Eligible applicants come from disciplines including health services research; economics; sociology; program evaluation; political science; public policy; public health; public administration; law; business administration; or other related fields. Applicants will write a proposal for a research study using anticipated data sets listed in the CFP. Eligible research projects can focus on a variety of topics, including, but not limited to national practice patterns in long-term care; public health surveillance and population health; rehospitalization rates; the opioid epidemic; maternal and infant health; home- and community-based services; racial and ethnic disparities; healthcare costs and utilization; prescription patterns and medication adherence; prevalence of chronic disease; trends in insurance markets; consolidation and competition; and rate comparisons. Award details: First Time Investigators Award: Up to $100K for 12-24 months. Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) Program: Climate and Health Interdisciplinary Awards (CHI) Synopsis: Supports collaborative exploratory work that opens new ground for comprehensively assessing or mitigating the impacts of climate change on human health. This program will support both individual scientists and multi-investigator teams. Early career faculty and postdoctoral fellows nearing their transition to independence are especially encouraged to apply, whether individually or within teams. BWF’s goal is to prime new discoveries in areas that are difficult to reach through discipline-specific, silo-driven approaches. The Fund will provide flexible funding for conceiving and piloting work that will grow into productive and informative collaborations among researchers addressing connected questions from fields that usually do not interact. PKD Foundation Program: RFA for Research Grants – Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Synopsis: Supports basic, translational, clinical, and epidemiology / data analysis research that will benefit patients with autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD and ARPKD). Applicants must have an M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent degree and hold a faculty appointment at the institution where the research will be conducted at the time of award. Special consideration will be given to proposals that address (partial) - diabetes and PKD; - clinical care disparities (e.g., race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, rural versus urban); and - innovative approaches to machine learning. Award details: $80K per year for 2 years. (Young Investigator Award is $240K over 3 years). No indirects allowed. No more than 50% of the Direct Costs ($40,000) may be used for the applicant’s or other personnel’s salary. Any use of the award for salary support must be justified in the application. Elsa U. Pardee Foundation Program: Grants for Cancer Research Synopsis: Supports investigators in United States non-profit institutions proposing research directed toward identifying new treatments or cures for cancer. The Foundation funds projects for a one-year period, which will allow the establishment of capabilities of new cancer researchers or new cancer approaches by established cancer researchers. It is anticipated that this early-stage funding by the Foundation may lead to subsequent and expanded support using government agency funding. Project relevance to cancer detection, treatment, or cure should be clearly identified. Award details: By design, there are no limits set on the grant amount that can be requested. It must be reasonable and clearly supported by the scope of the project outlined in the application. Applications requesting more than 5% overhead are usually not considered. U.S. Department of State Program: 2024-2025 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award Synopsis: Supports college and university faculty, administrators, and researchers, as well as artists and professionals, build their skills and connections, gain valuable international insights, and return home to share their experiences with their students and colleagues. Scholars come from and go to all institution types and geographic regions across the United States and around the world. Several opportunities within the Fulbright Scholar Program include the Global scholar award, Public Policy Award, Scholar Award, Arctic Initiative, and the Amazonia (which supports cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary, cross-sector collaboration on the Amazon region). Note: Beyond the Scholar Award, there is also the Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Award, Fulbright Postdoctoral Award, and the Fulbright International Education Administrator Award. Bureau of Land Management / BLMHQ - BLM Headquarters Program: Joint Fire Science Program (JFSP) Graduate Research Innovation (GRIN) Award (One task statement) Funding #: 2023 FA-NOFO0024-001 Synopsis: Supports research that addresses the Secretary of Interior’s priorities to “conserve at least 30% each of our lands and waters by the year 2030” and “centering equity and environmental justice” and the Secretary of Agriculture’s priorities to “address climate change and advance racial justice, equity, opportunity, and rural prosperity.” In addition, with respect to wildland fire in particular, JFSP research priorities address both Secretaries’ goals of reducing the occurrence and impacts of catastrophic wildfires by contributing to the underlying scientific understanding and decision support tools needed to make informed decisions. JFSP invites current master's and doctoral students enrolled at colleges or universities within the US in wildland fire and related physical, biological, and social sciences to apply for a Graduate Research Innovation (GRIN) award. Recipients of the GRIN award are required to produce at least one management/policy-oriented tool or summary guide based on the funded project. Awardees also are expected to present their work at one regional, national, or international fire conference or workshop. Finally, the awardee is expected to write an acceptable final report for the JFSP prior to the project end date. These are one-time awards, and no supplemental funds will be granted. Department of Defense (DoD) / Navy Program: Class of 2024 Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowship (VBFF) Program Funding Opportunity #: N00014-23-S-F006 Synopsis: Supports distinguished researchers for the purpose of conducting single investigator innovative basic research in areas of interest to the DoD and fostering long-term relationships between the VBFF Fellows and the DoD. The proposed research must satisfy the primary program objective of ambitious scientific exploration, which includes (1) To support unclassified basic scientific and engineering research that could be the foundation for future revolutionary new capabilities for DoD; (2) To educate and train student and post-doctoral researchers for the defense workforce; (3) To foster long-term relationships between university researchers and the DoD; (4) To familiarize university researchers and their students with DoD’s current and projected future challenges; (5) To increase the number of talented technical experts that DoD can call upon. NSF / Across All Directorates Program: Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Solicitation #: NSF 23-605 Synopsis: Supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology 3 years of support over a 5-year fellowship period for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education. NSF actively encourages submission of applications from the full spectrum of diverse talent in STEM. NSF especially encourages applications from undergraduate seniors and Bachelor's degree-holders interested in pursuing research-based graduate study in STEM. First- and second-year graduate students in eligible STEM fields and degree programs are also encouraged to apply. Fellowship applications must be submitted by the prospective Fellow. Award details: The awardee institution receives up to a $53,000 award per Fellow who uses the support in a fellowship year. The awardee institution is responsible for disbursement of fellowship funds to the Fellow. NSF / Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences – Division of Mathematical Sciences Program: Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (MSPRF) Solicitation #: NSF 23-603 Synopsis: Supports future leaders in mathematics and statistics by facilitating their participation in postdoctoral research environments that will have a maximal impact on their future scientific development. There are two options for awardees: Research Fellowship and Research Instructor-ship. Awards will support research in areas of mathematics and statistics, including applications to other disciplines. Please consult the solicitation for all of the eligibility requirements but we mention here that applicants may not have held their doctorate for more than 2 years as of January 1 of the year of the award; may not have been a PI or co-PI of an NSF award (other than a graduate research fellowship or an award in support of a conference or workshop); and again, must propose research in the area of mathematics or statistics. Award details: Fellowship awards are for a total of $190,000, ($70K annually for full-time award). The anticipated date of awards is April in the year following the proposal deadline and the duration of the award is 48 months. NSF / Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (DMS) Program: Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Solicitation #: NSF 23-606 Synopsis: Supports advancing research in the mathematical sciences, increasing the impact of the mathematical sciences in other disciplines, and expanding the talent base engaged in mathematical research in the United States. Institutes have proven to be an effective means of achieving these goals. Two institutes were established in 1980; since then, the portfolio of Mathematical Sciences Research Institutes has evolved, and DMS now supports several U.S.-based institutes. The structure of a proposed institute is unspecified. DMS encourages prospective applicants to consider the structure of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institutes currently supported by the Division and, where appropriate, to propose alternative structures that complement the existing ones and increase the potential to transform the mathematical sciences landscape. Award details: Awards are expected to range from $2.5M to $6M per year for up to 5 years.
