Summer is here, school is out and the tempurature has gone up! Below you will find some fun     kid-friendly summer recipes, tips on protecting children from the sun and more!

Going on a summer road trip? Forget the plastic bags everywhere and grab a hobby box. Fill it with healthy child-friendly snacks such as grapes, crackers, cheese, carrots ect.  Snacks stay nice and organized and are easily accessible! Older children can keep the box with them and for younger children, the box can easily be passed back and forth.

Sun Safety

Keeping children safe and healthy in the sun

Summer is here and the sun is out! Keeping your children protected from the sun is a very important part of keeping them healthy and allows children to have a more enjoyable time in the sun. Using sunscreen regularly can help protect their skin from sunburn and from some skin cancers if used properly.  Here are some tips on the proper use of sunscreen.
  • Choose a sunscreen that says "broad-spectrum" on the label.  "Board-spectrum" means it will block both UVB and UVA rays.
  • Use at least 15 SPF (sun protection factor).  The higher the SPF, the more UVB protection the sunscreen has.
  • Look for the UVA "Star" rating system on the label.
    • One star is low UVA
    • Two stars is medium protection
    • Three stars is high protection
    • Four stars is the highest UVA protection.
  • Use enough sunscreen to cover all exposed areas, especially the face, nose, ears, feet and hands and even backs of knees.
  • Put sunscreen on 30 minutes before going outside.  It needs time to absorb.
  • Use sunscreen even on cloudy days.
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and after swimming, sweating or just from being in the sun.
  • For Babies younger than 6 months use sunscreen on small areas of the body such as face and the backs of hands.
  • For babies older than 6 months apply to all areas of the body but be careful around the eyes, wipe the eyes and hands clean with a damp cloth. If sunscreen irritates skin, try a different brand.
