Alumni and Friends,
Welcome to the first issue of E-Viewpoints in 2018! We already have so much good news to share, I hope you find it informative and enjoyable. The mission of the College of Human Sciences is to improve and enhance the human condition, and after reading the stories below, it is evident that our faculty, staff, students, and alumni are doing just that.

I am proud of the awards and recognition that our departments, centers, faculty, and students have received. From the Apparel Design and Manufacturing program being named one of the top ten Fashion Design Schools in the Southwest, to a faculty member receiving the first Advocacy Leadership Award from TD Ameritrade, to our student being named Homecoming Queen; there is much to celebrate.

The College of Human Sciences (COHS) welcomed in the new year with its first Human Sciences Day event to celebrate the unique aspects of the college. Students were able to meet with COHS student organizations, academic advisors, and learn about exciting opportunities in the college.

Drs. Andrew Shin and Shu Wang have been selected for the 2017 Texas Tech University's Presidents' Collaborative Research Initiative. The initiative aims to provide institutional support for collaborative research efforts that could go on to receive federal funding.

Personal Financial Planning Professor Harold Evensky Awarded First Advocacy Leadership Award
TD Ameritrade Institutional presented Personal Financial Planning (PFP) professor Harold Evensky with its first Advocacy Leadership Award for his outstanding contributions to advancing the long-term viability and growth of financial investment advice. The award was created to recognize champions of fiduciary investment advice.

Eye Tracking and Robots: Early Interventions for Children at Risk for Autism
Ann Mastergeorge, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, and a team of researchers are using eye-tracking technology to monitor what children look at on video screens, considering those with autism are likely to focus on unimportant details and not faces. The Research in Early Development Studies Laboratory is conducting groundbreaking work to help children as young as 12 months old.

The Curriculum Center for Family and Consumer Sciences (CCFCS) Celebrates 50 Years
The Curriculum Center for Family and Consumer Sciences (CCFCS) celebrated 50 years of service on October 20, 2017. CCFCS serves as the only curriculum center in the nation that specializes in developing curriculum materials for family and consumer sciences of various grade levels.

Over 50 faculty members across Texas Tech were honored during the celebration with College of Human Sciences (COHS) well-represented by the inclusion of 8 faculty members.

The College of Human Sciences (COHS) Research Office announced the recipients of the Come 'N' Go Domestic Research Collaboration Seed Grants on October 10, 2017. In order to promote research collaboration between the COHS and other national institutions, the program awards grants that allow co-contributors to visit each other's campuses and implement joint research projects.

Thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation, Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) Associate Professor, Dr. Zhen Cong, and co-principal investigator Dr. Daan Liang are working to develop a model that can show with greater precision what elderly people’s strengths and weaknesses are in emergency situations.

Casey Batten, a junior Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) student, was an unexpected hero in this crisis. Instead of attending her first week of classes, she was helping people in Port Aransas impacted by Hurricane Harvey, doing her duty as a Senior Airman in the National Guard.

Human Sciences Students Selected as Senior Captains for 2018 Red Raider Orientation

Human Development and Family Studies' Sara Eaves and Nutritional Sciences' Abigail Jackson were the top candidates chosen for the leadership role of Senior Captains for Red Raider Orientation (RRO) for summer 2018. RRO is a two-day experience that allows first year students to learn what it means to be a Red Raider with guidance from current undergraduate Red Raider Orientation Crew members and professional staff.

Hospitality and Retail Management (HRM) graduate student Brianna Ellison competed at the International Taekwondo Federation World Championship this October in Dublin, Ireland. The Odessa, Texas native has been practicing taekwondo for 17 years.

Human Development and Family Studies Doctoral Student Selected for Teaching Mentorship Program
Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) Jes Cardenas was recentley selected as a part of the 2018 SRCD Teaching Mentorship Program. The mentorship program was developed to assist novice or early-career teachers in navigating faculty life through the development of a relationship with an experienced mentor from another institution.

Alumna Julie Mumme Smith awarded 2017 Meritorious Service Award
2001 Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FCSE) alumna Julie Mumme Smith was awarded the 2017 Meritorious Service Award. Julie applied for the award through the Texas Association of Extension 4-H Agents and was selected as this year's recipient at the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents Ceremony.

Senior Human Development and Family Studies Major Casey Fleming Crowned Homecoming Queen
College of Human Sciences student Casey Fleming was crowned the 2017 Homecoming Queen at halftime of the Texas Tech vs. Iowa State football game in October. Casey is currently studying Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) before she plans to pursue a career as an Occupational Therapist.
