Welcome to the latest issue of E-Viewpoints, the newsletter for the College of Human Sciences at Texas Tech University. This past spring semester, we witnessed our students, alumni, faculty, and staff receive recognition for their dedication to improving and enhancing the human condition.
As you will find in this issue, many notable academic achievements and community engagement efforts have taken place this year. We have seen new leadership take shape across our departments, and we witnessed our programs celebrate a new class of graduates ready to impact the world. From four faculty members elected to the Texas Tech University Teaching Academy to the prestigious Texas Tech President’s Excellence in Research Commercialization Award to Human Sciences students receiving nationally recognized awards, I am honored to share these stories.

Human Sciences Student Accepted to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton
Destiny Taylor was recently accepted into the country's top graduate schools to pursue a career in ministerial arts. Taylor worked as a student in two different research labs. The first was with Dr. Klein and Britanny Neilson, a Ph.D. candidate, to measure workload stress and the benefits of a restorative break in nature. In the second lab, she worked with Dr. Dana Weiser to develop a coding guide used for a project on infidelity partners' relationship trajectories.

Then and Now: Alumnus and CEO of Roots Market & Juicery Brent Rodgers Shares Latest News on Farm-to-Table Juice Company

Brent Rodgers earned a bachelor's degree in Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management (RHIM) and a master's in Personal Financial Planning (PFP) from the College of Human Sciences at Texas Tech. After graduation, he found himself ready to move on from his time as a stockbroker for a Fortune 500 company. He began traveling the world to places like Peru, where he was inspired to create a farm-to-table juice company known as Roots Market and Juicery.
Asebedo Selected as School of Financial Planning Director
Asebedo Named Director for School of Financial Planning at Texas Tech
Sarah D. Asebedo, Ph.D., CFP®, was named the new School Director for the School of Financial Planning at Texas Tech University. Asebedo has served at Texas Tech since 2016 as an assistant professor and previously was Director of the Life Centered Financial Planning program at Texas Tech University. Prior to Texas Tech, Asebedo was an assistant professor of practice at Virginia Tech from 2014 to 2016.

Department of Design Graduate Student Receives Interior Design Educators Council Foundation Award
Interior and Environmental Design Ph.D. student Farzane Omidi participated in The Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) Annual Conference. The conference hosts 300-400 members, educators, practitioners, and graduate students and provides opportunities for research related to design, teaching and learning, and creative scholarship.

Human Sciences Faculty Elected to Prestigious Teaching Academy

Four faculty members in the College of Human Sciences have been elected for membership in the Texas Tech University Teaching Academy. The Teaching Academy has been limited to no more than 20% of the Texas Tech faculty since its inception in 1997. These faculty are applauded for their demonstrated dedication to excellence in teaching and their efforts to further the development of the scholarship of teaching and learning.

New Partnership Announced Between The Center for Collegiate Recovery Communities and Dallas 24 Hour Club

Dallas 24 Hour Club Residents can now apply to the Center for Collegiate Recovery Communities and earn a remote or in-person degree from Texas Tech The Dallas 24 Hour Club offers substance use treatment to those who are homeless in the Dallas area. The CCRC and Dallas 24 Hour Club are also raising scholarship funds to help offset the costs of residents' tuition costs.

Nutritional Sciences Faculty Member Receives TTU President’s Excellence in Research Commercialization Award
Nutritional Sciences faculty member, Nikhil Dhurandhar, Ph.D., received the TTU President's Excellence in Research Commercialization Award for his team's efforts in substantially advancing the development of an anti-diabetes drug from a viral protein. The President's Excellence in Commercialization Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the commercialization of innovative work done by TTU faculty.

Texas Tech University - Costa Rica Graduates Inaugural Class
These graduates are the first class to earn a Texas Tech degree completely outside the U.S. For many years, the university has worked to increase its global reach and impact. We celebrate a historic moment for Texas Tech University and for the students in Costa Rica. "I am very excited to be able to share this moment with our students in the inaugural graduation from TTUCR. We started our journey with TTU together 4 years ago. I am proud of all they have accomplished during their time with us." -HRM Chair, Robert Paul Jones, Ph.D.

Human Development and Family Sciences Alumna Named Overture Center’s New Director of Equity & Innovation

Ida serves as the director of equity and innovation at the Overture Center for the Arts. The center is a performing arts center and art gallery in Madison, Wisconsin. The center aims to provide an exciting experience for visitors and showcase expressive art forms to the community. Her career allows her to make connections and show visitors the creative culture through art. Balderrama-Trudell says she said she enjoys working in positions related to programs that support historically marginalized and underserved individuals.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education Faculty Member Receives Great Plains IDEA Award

Assistant professor Kyle Roberson, Ph.D., was recently recognized at the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (Great Plains IDEA) Annual Conference with the Great IDEA Award. This award recognizes best practices and innovative contributions by faculty, staff, and administrators who work with Great Plains IDEA. The Great IDEA award acknowledges individuals who positively impact Great Plains IDEA programs and students. Roberson was recognized for leading the Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FCSE) team in their use of Twitter.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education Alumna Leads the Next Generation of Educators
In 1983, Rachel Higginbotham Baxter received her degree in Home Economics, now referred to as Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FCSE). Today, Baxter works in Mobile, Alabama, as a culinary teacher. Baxter knew from a young age that she wanted to be a teacher. After many hardships and challenging times, she was encouraged by family members to become a home economics teacher. She now enjoys every part of her job and working with directly with students to improve their valuable life skills.

Couple, Marriage, and Family Therapy Alumnus Jerry Gale Nominated for the Creswell Award

Meaningful, helpful, and passionate are just a few characteristics that describe Texas Tech alumnus, Jerry Gale, Ph.D. He has impacted many former students and has left a legacy of educational and personal accomplishments. Because of his community involvement and academic achievements, Gale was nominated for the prestigious Creswell Award from the University of Georgia. The Creswell Award recognizes a current or retired faculty or staff member, who has provided leadership in motivating and guiding students.

Texas Tech’s Family Therapy Clinic Opens Doors to Lubbock Community and Beyond
The Family Therapy Clinic at Texas Tech provides affordable, high-quality therapeutic services to individuals, students, couples, and families in Lubbock and surrounding communities. The clinic has faculty supervisors overseeing graduate student therapists from the Couple, Marriage, and Family Therapy (CMFT) program. Services are available to Texas Tech students and anyone in the Lubbock community. With increased access to rural areas through teletherapy technology, the clinic opens its doors to more clients.

Nutritional Sciences Student Selected for Prestigious 2022 Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship
Disha Ganjegunte is broadening her career choices by double majoring in Nutrition and General Studies with three minors in Theatre, Chemistry, and Biology. She hopes to create positive change for the world, whether in entertainment, advocacy, or healthcare. As a 2022 Frederick Douglass Global Fellow, she has been awarded a full scholarship to represent Texas Tech in Ireland for a four-week leadership program. Ganjegunte and other recipients will focus on social justice, peace, and conflict resolution in this program.

Student Works to Achieve Dream of Becoming a Registered Nurse while simultaneously Completing Dual-Degree in Nursing and Human Sciences

Gonzales knew at a young age that she wanted to become a nurse when she grew up. Helping to raise her three nephews and her desire to take care of her parents down the road added to her dream of one day becoming a nurse. When she came to Texas Tech, her advisors helped her get on the right path to becoming a nurse and obtaining a dual degree from both the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) and from the College of Human Sciences.

Hospitality and Retail Management Faculty Member Receives Second Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award

Professor Natalia Velikova, Ph.D., recently received her second Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State to improve intercultural relations, cultural diplomacy, and intercultural competence between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of people, knowledge, and skills. Competitively-selected American scholars receive awards to conduct research and/or teach abroad.

Personal Financial Planning Alumnus Appointed to Position on CFP Board

In 2010, David Nanigian received his Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning (PFP) from Texas Tech University. Earlier this spring, Nanigian was named the next Director of Education for the Certified Financial Planner™ Board of Standards (CFP Board). As the Director of Education, Nanigian will use skills learned from the PFP program to manage CFP Board programs and uphold the mission of the board.

Human Development and Family Sciences Ph.D. Student Earns First Place in Poster Competition
Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) Ph.D. student Derek Morgan won first place for his research poster on parental mental health during COVID-19 at the McKenzie Lectureship Series Conference. Morgan's research findings were published in the article titled, The Transmission of Mental Illness from Parents to Their Adolescents During COVID-19: The Roles of Parenting and Closeness by Derek Morgan, Conna­d Higgins, and Christy Rogers.

Apparel Design and Manufacturing Seniors Showcase Collections at Techstyle 2022 Fashion Show

The Techstyle 2022 Annual Fashion show was hosted at the Museum of Texas Tech on Saturday, May 7. Senior Apparel Design and Manufacturing (ADM) majors showcased the one-of-a-kind pieces they created throughout the semester. Each Student who had their collection showcased at the show used things around them as well as other designers to inspire them and their creativity. Students drew inspiration from nature, architecture, music, and even past decades. Award winners for juried designs were also celebrated during the show's presentation.

Human Sciences Student Receives Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award

Human Sciences major Rebecca Steinman received the Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award during the Undergraduate Research Conference. Steinman's research focused on physician assistant motivation and satisfaction before and after COVID-19. Physician Assistants (PA) were interviewed about their experiences before and after the pandemic and coded their responses by identifying themes. She then analyzed the responses and created a poster that showcased their motivations, satisfaction, and advice for students pursuing a career as a PA.

Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management Faculty Member Receives Diversity and Inclusion Award

Assistant professor Michelle Alcorn, Ph.D., in the Department of Hospitality and Retail Management, was recently awarded the Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award in the category for Early-Career Academic. The Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award is sponsored by California State University, Sacramento, and was presented at the 2022 Virtual West Federation International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (WF ICHRIE) Conference, February 10-12, 2022.

Texas Tech Announces Charles Schwab Foundation Personal Financial Planning Clinic

Texas Tech's School of Financial Planning announced the naming of the Charles Schwab Foundation Personal Financial Planning Clinic. This expansion will provide state-of-the-art resources to train students, individual space for financial coaching, and recording capability for research and customer service training. The clinic will be located on the third floor of the Texas Tech Plaza building, at the corner of 19th Street and University Avenue.

Human Sciences Students Partner with Ronald McDonald House to Serve Lubbock Community
Students in the Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management (RHIM) Association partnered with Eta Sigma Delta on March 8th, 2022 at Skyviews restaurant to make meals for the Lubbock Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House is an organization dedicated to helping families to stay together, specifically for families who have hospitalized children. It allows families who do not live close to a children's hospital to have a place to stay that feels like home without the families incurring food and hotel expenses.
