Engage students through discussion and feedback. |
-
Increase wait or pause time. To increase student participation, try increasing the wait time from when a question is asked to when it is answered. Communicate to students that they will be given time to process and think before being invited to provide an answer. Try at least 3-5 seconds for recall based questions and 7-10 seconds for more complex ones.
-
Provide formative feedback to students early and often. Feedback should be specific, clear, and tied to concrete goals. Instead of vague comments, suggest how students can improve. Once students receive feedback, ensure they have an opportunity to use that feedback to improve their work.
-
Resources on Spider Web discussions in classrooms or in online settings to try.
-
Resources on Canvas discussions: Best practices in online discussion delivery and using discussions in Canvas.
-
Resource from Active Teaching Lab on feedback.
