Make a difference this Earth Day!
Make a difference this Earth Day!

ACTION ALERT:
- WYDEN TOWN HALL
EARTH DAY
- CLIMATE MARCH

Feel unhappy with current political trends?  This is your chance to #resist in three easy local activities.
We're heading into a busy two weeks of celebration and activism!  Saturday, April 22nd, marks the 47th Earth Day, and there's a lot you can do to participate in Eastern Oregon.  Our elected representatives need to see a strong showing of support for the environment and for science from their constituents.  You can help!
1.) Attend Earth Day and Science Works! Festival in La Grande, Saturday, April 22nd
On Earth Day, many groups and individuals (including HCPC) will be tabling in La Grande's Max Square from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to celebrate our one-of-a-kind earth and science.  There will be something to learn and do for all ages.  Be there!
2.) Participate in Senator Wyden's Town Hall Meeting, Saturday, April 22nd
We desperately need locals to tell our elected officials that Eastern Oregon's public lands are more than a timber farm and open playground for ATVs and OHVs.
Senator Wyden is making the rounds again with his Town Hall meetings, and he needs to hear from you.  Too often, voices advocating for conservation are drowned out by an intimidating and outspoken "mainstream."  Don't be intimidated!  Senator Wyden is here to listen to ALL of the voices of this community, and right now he is getting a skewed representation of Eastern Oregonians' values.
Your question to the Senator can be as simple as "What are you doing to protect our cherished wildlands from extractive industries like logging and mining?" to something more pointed like "I don't want to see more sensitive meadows trashed by ATV mudding this spring.  How will your office help remedy the dire problem of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest having no Travel Management Plan?"  Really, the content of your question isn't as important as the simple act of letting Wyden know there are many, many Eastern Oregonians who care about conservation, public lands, science, and wildlife.  Attending and speaking in your voice to your values could be the most important action you can take for conservation on Earth Day.
The Senator will hold his town hall meeting in the La Grande High School auditorium at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, April 22nd.  The high school is found at 708 K Ave, and the entrance to the auditorium is between H and K Avenues on 2nd St.
Wallowa County folks, he will be at the Joseph Community Center on Sunday, April 23rd at 11:00 a.m., and Umatilla residents, at Jack Williams Auditorium, McLoughlin High School, 102 S Main St, Milton-Freewater at 3:30 on Sunday, April 23rd.
3.) March for Science and the Climate on Saturday, April 29th
Come join a peaceful demonstration voicing support for national policies that protect the environment and ourselves.
The march will begin in La Grande at Max Square at 2:00 p.m., march a loop around down town, then meet back at Max Square for the post-march rally with brief speeches on use of good science, the state of the environment, and the recent attacks on environmental education and justice. Marchers will be joining hundreds of thousands of people across the globe to promote social and environmental justice.
Please make signs!
The march will engage in the principles of non-violent resistance, including no drugs or alcohol.  For questions, or if you'd like to speak on the importance of science or climate change, contact Joe Corsini or Camie Miller.
