Happy June!

And happy Summer! We hope you're as excited as we are about all the fun-filled days that are ahead of us this month. There are a ton of things to look forward to-- World Environment Day (on June 5th), Juneteenth, and the beginning of Summer on June 20th!

On May 14th we said goodbye to our long-time Executive Director Robin Dougherty and honored her by celebrating her signature program, the Newark Youth Leadership Program (NYLP). In a small, intimate (and COVID-friendly) event, we were able to hear first-hand from NYLP alumni, toast Robin, and unveil our new Urban Bird Observation Post!

Thanks to the support of people like you, Greater Newark Conservancy will continue to thrive in providing essential environmental and urban agriculture programming and job training to adults and youth in the city of Newark and its surrounding communities!

Welcome Ian J. Benjamin!

With the news that Robin Dougherty has stepped down to pursue other interests and spend more time with her family, we are excited to welcome Ian Benjamin as Greater Newark Conservancy’s Interim Executive Director!

Ian will ensure the Conservancy’s mission, values, and goals continue to be met as we plan for the transition to a new Executive Director to lead the Conservancy. During this period the Conservancy will continue to serve the Newark community with programs addressing food insecurity, urban farming, health, and education. Programs including Second Saturday, Plot It Fresh, and volunteer opportunities will continue at the Conservancy’s Urban Environmental Center, the Hawthorne Avenue Farm, and at school gardens.

Youth Farm Stand

Our Youth Farm Stand is back!

The first farm stand will start at the end of June!

Get ready for farm-fresh produce grown at our urban farm on Hawthorne Avenue right here in Newark's South Ward.

Times are subject to change based on weather and produce availability but follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the most up-to-date information on Pop-Up Markets, weather-related postponements, and weekly produce availability!

Watch out on social media and our website for our farm stand dates and times.

Don't forget to check out the online market, Urban Agriculture Cooperative, a food hub model where we “harvest to order” to reduce potential food waste. Online ordering will take place Thursday through Monday. Once you place your online we will prepare your order for pick up!

Who wants to be a college mentor?

We are looking for dedicated and adventurous college or university students to serve as "College Mentors" in the Conservancy's Newark Youth Leadership Project. College Mentors work in one of four departments (education, youth farm stand, horticulture, and urban farming) and are employed for up to ten weeks from June to August 2021.

Second Saturday Family Adventure

For Second Saturday Family Adventure this month Ms. Sarah taught the children about flower parts and structures! Although it was a rainy day, we had so many families come out and join us to take part in this educational fun.

Everyone got to explore our gardens with a fun scavenger hunt, trying to match flowers with their color pallets. After, the children got to examine their flowers under a microscope and learn about flower structure. They even got to take home a special Iris treat for Mother's Day!
