Weekly Update - december 5, 2019

Dear St. Lukers,

I don’t know about you, but this sermon series on the topic of “God’s intersections” is challenging me to think deeply about all the intersections I came across in life and my ministry here at St. Luke’s. As most would, I find reflecting on intersections in Advent particularly interesting because it’s about waiting during the craziest time of year; thinking of others while rushing to cross off tasks on our to do lists; creating meaningful connections while worrying about the stuff that needs to be done.

When we think of our lives intersecting with others, we may not often think of those we are serving. However, St. Luke’s “Restoring Hope” initiative is teaching us how we are interconnected in more ways than we realize. Reminder: The church campus will be closed from December 23 to 27 (with the exception of Christmas Preeve and Eve services) in observance of Christmas, and Wednesday, January 1 in observance of New Year's Day.

We invite St. Lukers, family, and friends to join us on Sunday, December 29 at 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary for a service of carols and Scripture lessons.

St. Luke's Tackles Hunger

Thank you to The West Orange Times for writing a fantastic article about St. Luke's partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and Olympia High School! Titan Market, a student-led market where students have healthy food options at no cost to them, has been embraced by the kids and volunteers since its opening earlier this year.

Looking Ahead at St. Luke's

In addition to supporting St. Luke’s existing ministries, you can help families who are homeless and children who are hungry through the Restoring Hope Offering. Pick up an Advent Offering tag, available outside each worship venue, to learn more about helping working families move out of motels, storage units, and over-crowded houses, and into their own apartments as well as support access to empowerment programs like Jobs Partnership and Circles all while closing the meal gaps for children.

The holidays can be a difficult time for those who’ve experienced the loss of a loved one, a divorce or separation, loss of a job, cancer or illness that puts a question mark over the future, and a number of other human situations. Parties and festivities can be painful for many people in our congregation and community. On December 22, St. Luke’s will offer a special time of reflection, hope, and healing at our Blue Christmas Service at 6:00 p.m. in Founder’s Hall. Join us in this sacred space and find comfort and acceptance this season.
