The CMU Swartz Center Inducts New Cohort of
Undergraduate Innovation Scholars 
The CMU Swartz Center has inducted its 2021-2023 cohort of undergraduate Innovation Scholars. The thirteen students represent a variety of CMU schools including: Engineering, Tepper, Dietrich, School of Computer Science and CMU Qatar. Each Scholar will complete a two-year program that integrates networking, mentorship and work experience at a startup while being exposed to CMU alumni entrepreneurs and investors at the weekly Proseminars. Students with their own startup are eligible to receive a $6K stipend to work on their company in the summer of 2022.

The 2021-2023 Innovation Scholars are:

Avika Bansal (CIT-Chemical Engineering), Audrey Young (CIT-Mechanical Engineering), Rebecca Button (CIT, Electrical Engineering), Nancy Zuo (Dietrich/HCI), Anjali Akula (Dietrich), Jessi Figard (Dietrich), Alejandro Garcia (Tepper), John (Jack) Winters (Tepper), Miguel Brandao (CIT), Steven Wu (SCS), Ishgun Singh Arora (Tepper), Haoyang He (CIT/ECE) and Yusufbek Nasriddinov (CMU Qatar).

Wise Telemetry Acquired by Otodata Technologies USA  

Otodata Technologies USA ("Otodata") has acquired Wise Telemetry, a leading provider of remote monitoring devices and services for the industrial gas industry. Founded in 2014 by CMU alumnus Eric Wise, the company has the capacity to monitor every aspect of gas distribution from tanker trucks and bulk tanks to dewars and cylinders. Read more.

This unique group of experts will share insight into how their experiences led to innovations in patient care and will provide lessons learned and practical advice.

Apply To Be An Innovation Fellow 
 
The CMU Swartz Center is seeking applications for its 2021 Innovation Fellows program. The year-long entrepreneurial program is offered to CMU graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research assistants working with faculty investigators on university research. The goal of the program is to support researchers in exploring the potential for creating a successful company based on their technology.
 
Along with cohort-based educational workshops and expert one-on-one mentoring, Innovation Fellows receive a $50K contribution from the Swartz Center, with a required $50K match from another source, to assist with commercializing university research.

AI/ML & Fintech Microcommunities
The CMU T&E Microcommunities bring together subgroups of members interested in specific industry topics and disciplines such as AI/ML, Edutech, Blockchain, etc. The microcommunities are managed by the T&E's Community Experience department, whose goal is to build a strong sense of community and culture centered on service and entrepreneurship. As the CMU T&E community grows in membership, the goal is to grow the number of microcommunities, their individual memberships, connections and activity.

Over the next few months, the CMU T&E group aims to kick-off its top two microcommunities of interest: AI/ML and Fintech. Leads and advisors are needed to help create opportunities for members to connect and share knowledge, plan happy hours, industry chats, AMAs and more. Find out how to get involved here

CMU Swartz Center Startup Toyz Electronics Accepted Into Startup Boost Pre-Accelerator


Toyz Electronics, a technology company bringing personalization & customization to the tech space, has been accepted into Startup Boost Pittsburgh's Spring 2021 pre-accelerator program. Toyz Electronics' product, TOYZSTEAM, uses product design and virtual learning to increase diversity and inspire innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) fields.

Founded by Damola Idowu and his son, CMU Electrical and Computer Engineering alumnus Wole Idowu, Toyz Electronics has participated in many programs offered at the CMU Swartz Center. Damola is also a regular speaker for the CONNECTS seminar series.
