Dear Partners,
When we focus on our work, we sometimes miss valuable feedback from those we serve. This week, however, we received wonderful comments from parents and a student regarding Operation Xcel’s afterschool program at Hairston Middle School.
Operation Homework is our after-school enrichment program designed to help students improve in Math, Reading, and Science while also integrating Social Emotional Learning and Physical Education. As a result, our program participants achieved over 90% self-efficacy in STEAM subjects. This program is an essential part of Operation Xcel’s initiative, available at seven sites across Guilford County and Stokesdale.
Currently, we are hosting End of the Year Showcases, where students present projects from the Operation Homework program, including STEAM, robotics, and life skills. These events celebrate student creativity and community support.
During the first week of the showcases, parents expressed their appreciation for the program at Hairston Middle School. One mother praised her child's growth, highlighting how they have thrived in this supportive environment, despite some initial concerns about enrolling in the school. A student shared her love for the program and the invaluable support she receives from her teachers. Another mother expressed appreciation for how Operation Xcel recognized the students' mothers and maternal figures. She admires how we demonstrate genuine care for the mothers' well-being. While such praise may boost one's ego, for Operation Xcel, it reinforces the positive impact of our programming on the families we serve.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the mission of Operation Xcel!
Warm regards,
Charlene Gladney, Executive Director
