Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and is celebrated on the anniversary of General Order No. 3, issued by Major General Gordon Granger, on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas. The day was first recognized as a national holiday in 2021 with the signing of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. Join our Jewish community for the upcoming events honoring Juneteenth in Greater Washington.
In honor of Juneteenth, Washington Hebrew Congregation invites you to end your week and welcome Shabbat with their Jews of Color group. Register by tonight, June 13th, to honor the many identities within the community this Shabbat.
