2022 Spring Conferment of Decoration
On April 29, 2022, the government of Japan conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, on Laurence Richard Kominz, Professor of Japanese Language and Literature at Portland State University. The Order of the Rising Sun is one of Japan’s highest distinctions and is awarded in recognition of Professor Kominz’s extensive contributions to the introduction of Japanese culture in the United States and to the promotion of mutual understanding between Japan and the United States. The 33rd Annual Japanese Speech Contest Held
On Saturday, April 23, 2022, a Japanese speech contest was held for high school students who are studying Japanese in Oregon at the Wells Fargo Center Building in Portland. Everyone gave excellent speeches. The winner was Ms. Dayana Vargas Pineda, a 12th grader of International School of Beaverton, who gave a speech about “My future dream that gifted by education”. She also participated in the All-USA High School Japanese Speech Contest on June 5th and took the Second place. Congratulations!

Exhibition: Gifts from Japan: A Horticultural Tale Told through Botanical Art When: May 4- July 4 Where: Portland Japanese Garden The exhibition is featuring a collection of richly captured botanical illustrations from the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Garden (CA), these artworks present a window into the Japanese American experience as immigrant families cultivated gardens and helped naturalize such well-known flowers as orchids, camellias, and irises.

Event: Tanabata / The Star FestivalWhen: Sunday, July 10 l 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Where: Portland Japanese Garden, Portland Tanabata is one of five seasonal festivals celebrated in Japan since the 8th century. The Star Festival features a colorful display of tanzaku, or wish strips, hanging from bamboo.

Exhibition: Na Omi Judy Shintani: Dream Refuge for Children Imprisoned

Where: Japanese American Museum of Oregon, Portland
This installation explores the trauma of children taken from communities that were denied their culture, such as Japanese American children incarcerated in American concentration camps during World War II.

Experience Asian cultural heritage and traditions through dance, music, foods, arts, crafts, exhibits, and more. The Oregon Asian Celebration is produced by the Asian American Council of Oregon.
