First: a big "Thank You!" to all who came to our 2021 Open Studio. Josh had a great time demonstrating glassblowing, even managing to make several nice pieces in spite of the fact that his propensity to completely screw up increases exponentially according to the number of people watching. (But with glass, you can see how even the throw-away shards are beautiful!)
In another Megacommunique coming soon, we will feature the wonderful work he made. Until then, speaking of things going smoothly...
Smooth Portals
Simpson Glass Portals feature a cutaway polished surface that reveals an intriguing world held within an outer universe. Almost like a portal into another dimension, each sculpted orb offers an almost endless variety of scenes, depending on the angle from which it is viewed.
Unlike Josh's familiar Tektite Portals with their gnarly, lava-like exterior, the colorful interior of Smooth Portals is encased by gleaming Corona, New Mexico, or simple black glass that's as smooth as, well... glass!!
Josh recently created a new collection of these unique, evocative sculptures. Clicking on any photo below will reveal more intriguing details.

The Infinity Planet recipient

this month is Megan H. of Dallas, TX. When she was in sixth grade, her grandmother let her pick out her own Simpson Planet at the end of the school year, and that little glass world has been her talisman ever since, going everywhere with her, a witness to her life. She plans to hide her Infinity Planet in the Arbuckle Mountains of Oklahoma. With the region's Native American history and Sasquatch lore, she feels this will be a magical place for a Planet to lie in wait for someone who will treasure and find wonder in their very own talisman.

Meet Josh's Newest Family Member!

Named "Claw" (just ask Josh why!), the kitten is pictured here yesterday for the 1/30th of a second when he was not dashing around or climbing up and down the furniture.
