Dear Graduate Students:
Happy last month of the year! In 2015, we had a few "firsts" and initiated some new events. For example: The Grad Slam, which originated at UCSB as the brainchild of Graduate Division Dean Carol Genetti, went UC-wide. All campuses held their own competitions, and their champions went on to compete in the inaugural UC Grad Slam. There, our own Champion, Daniel Hieber, took second place. We held an inaugural Beyond Academia one-day conference dedicated to exploring careers outside and alongside the academy. We published our first "Graduate Education" magazine. And the Graduate Division hosted the California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education (see article below). It was a busy year, and we look forward to offering you more exciting events, workshops, and conferences in 2016!. ... Before the new year, if you are a first-generation graduate student heading home for the holidays and dreading all that family drama, we have just the webinar for you! In "Smarty Pants Comes Home for the Holidays" on December 14, Dr. Stacey Patton will share lessons she's learned as well as a practical guide. Get details on how to register for the free webinar. ... We would like to invite you to subscribe to the GradPost newsfeed to get all the latest news in your inbox, and encourage you to like our GradPost Facebook page. ... As always, the GradPost and Graduate Student Resource Center staff members (Director of Graduate Student Professional Development Robert Hamm; Graduate Student Career Consultant Lana Smith-Hale; Communications Director Patricia Marroquin; Professional Development Program Coordinator Shawn Warner-Garcia; Funding Peer Stephanie Griffin; Writing Peer Kyle Crocco; and Diversity and Outreach Peer Charles Williams) are here to help. ... Graduate students, enjoy your holiday break, and we'll see you in 2016!

California Forum for Diversity a Big Hit at UCSB

Sociology Professor Dr. Victor Rios was the keynote speaker. Read a wrap-up of the event and view the video.
