Protect Your Accounts After Global Data Breach
On Friday, June 16, LMU learned of a global data breach affecting thousands of organizations worldwide, in which ransomware attacks took advantage of a popular file transfer tool’s security flaw. This vulnerability potentially exposed identifiable information stored in these organizations’ customer accounts, including names, addresses, social security numbers, and more. The full extent of the breach is still being investigated by affected companies and law enforcement. While the university’s own systems were not affected, LMU ITS is working diligently to determine the extent of any impacts connected to associated third-party vendors. At this time, there is no evidence that LMU community members were affected by the breach, but ITS is closely monitoring the situation and taking proactive precautionary measures to minimize any potential risk.
This exposed software vulnerability serves as another reminder to remain vigilant and take action to protect our personal information online. Remember to always monitor your bank accounts, credit reports, and other online portals, and take immediate action if you notice anything unusual. For further tips, review LMU ITS’ cybersecurity page.
At LMU, the security of your data is a top priority. The university will continue to share further updates surrounding the global data breach as appropriate.
